Durban - A 60-year-old woman suspected of witchcraft was shot dead and her house burnt down in northern KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Friday.
Captain Tienkie van Vuuren said Sibongile Sindisiwe Maklina was shot dead and her husband injured when two armed men fired shots at the family in the Machibini reserve area near Mtubatuba on Wednesday.
Her husband Faniseni, 65, was wounded in the hand.
Van Vuuren said the Maklina family, fearing the worst vacated their home.
Later that night their house was burnt down.
Police believed the motive for the killing was that the 60-year-old woman was suspected of being involved in witchcraft.
Van Vuuren said the Kwamsane police were investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and arson and hoped to make arrests soon.
