Johannesburg - A woman was killed when her flat caught fire in Pieterse Street in Alberton, east of Johannesburg, paramedics said on Saturday.

The fire started in the apartment situated above shops on Friday night, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

"The flat is occupied by a family of four and woken by the smoke, a man managed to run from the burning building with his two children," said Wicks.

"Flames had overrun the building and fire-fighters were hard at work battling the fire."

Another man was in a critical condition after trying to save the woman. He was taken to the Natalspruit State hospital.
