Bedfordview - A woman was killed and six people were injured in a crash after a minbus broke down on the N3 near Linksfield Road in Bedfordview on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said that a minibus's wheel came off, forcing the vehicle to a standstill in the centre lane of the highway.

Passengers started leaving the vehicle but a light delivery vehicle driving on the highway swerved to avoid the stationary minibus and allegedly crashed into the pedestrians on the road instead.

When paramedics checked the injured, they found that a woman had already died and two men were critically injured. The other four were also injured, but not as critically.

One person was airlifted to hospital for lifesaving treatment and the others, who were also being treated on scene, would also be taken to hospital.

Traffic on the freeway was severely affected.
