Polokwane - A Tzaneen woman has shot dead a man who attacked
her with a knife in a burnt-down storage room on a smallholding.
Susan Pohl, 52, was stabbed in her left arm before she fired
four shots at her attacker, killing him, reported Beeld.
"It was him or me,” said Pohl on Monday afternoon.
She told how she went to the burnt-down storage room on a smallholding
near Tzaneen as she did administrative work for the owners of the smallholding.
It was believed that criminals had set fire to the storage
facility over the weekend.
“The roof had caved in and I went inside to look at the
damage. Suddenly a man jumped out from behind the burnt rubble.”
The man had a knife with him and Pohl used her left arm to
block his attack, which is when she was stabbed in the left arm. She then
grabbed the licensed pistol on her hip and fired four shots at the man, three
of which hit him.
Pohl was widowed 11 years ago and lives alone. “I always carry a firearm with me because you
can never be too careful,” she said.
“It happened so quickly. I got a huge fright when he stormed
at me. If I hadn’t fired, I would be dead.”
Pohl needed five stitches to her arm.
A police spokesperson said the man had not yet been
identified and no murder charge would be investigated, but that an inquest
would be held.
