Potchefstroom - A Potchefstroom court heard on Monday how a young woman swallowed anti-depressants with rum before robbing a local supermarket while wearing a pair of panties on her head.

The court heard that Michelle Coetzee, 21, was suicidal when she took the tablets and couldn’t remember what happened afterwards.

She also couldn’t explain why she’d done it, reported Volksblad.

Coetzee pleaded guilty to several charges, including robbery, after holding a knife to a cashier’s neck and fleeing on a scooter with R7 000 in March this year.

Cashier Martie du Plooy testified: “She held the knife against my throat. She just said ‘open up, open up’. I then opened the cash register because I feared for my life. Then she grabbed R7 000 and left.”

Coetzee was given a suspended sentence of five years as well as correctional supervision, community service and had to go to rehab programmes.

The court was told about Coetzee’s severely dysfunctional family background, which included domestic violence, alcohol abuse and psychological problems.

The woman had tried to commit suicide before and had a history of drug abuse.
