Cape Town - A concerned Cape Town resident took a baby away from its drunk mother and gave the child to social workers.

The child’s mother discovered the baby was gone on Sunday and reported her missing, said the Cape Times.

The baby was born prematurely four months ago and was on special medication.

A police spokesperson said it was established on Monday that an unidentified Delft woman had been worried about the child’s safety and had taken her to social workers.

“Some of the residents in the area said the mother was too intoxicated to give an account of what happened to her baby,” said police spokesperson November Filander.

The baby would remain with social workers until an investigation into the mother’s circumstances was done.

A social development department spokesperson said they would look into the mother’s situation as well and whether she too needed help.

They would also investigate where the child’s father is and what role he plays in its life.
