Durban - Women and child abuse continues to engulf South Africa and is strongly condemned, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said on Friday.

"Conditions today are no longer the same as in the days where South Africa was clouded by oppressive apartheid laws," the African National Congress said in a statement.

"We however face the wave of women and child abuse, we have in the recent past witnessed the tragic rape of elderly women and children, something that we strongly condemn."

The party said Women's Day was a reminder of the role played by many of South Africa’s women who fought for liberation.

"This day cannot be celebrated without remembering more than 20 000 women of all races who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to present a petition against the carrying of passes by women.

"We wish all women of South Africa a delightful Women’s Day."
