Women should rule the world - Tutu

2011-10-08 14:24

Cape Town - The world would be a peaceful place if it were ruled by women, Archbishop Desmond Tutu said on Saturday.

Asked in a conversation with the Dalai Lama, via live-streaming and video link-up, how he believed war could be stopped, Tutu responded: "Actually it is very straightforward: let women take over."

He said women were by nature more inclined towards compassion, whereas men tend to feel they have to be "macho".
"You are basically life-giving, life-affirming. That is what you are naturally when you are unspoilt... Women can actually make society civil."

Tutu, who is celebrating his 80th birthday, ventured that if Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler had been given more love by his mother, history may have been different.

"Hitler was not dangled by his mother. He did not get the sense of security... because he felt empty inside himself, as bullies tend to, he tried to get affirmation by being nasty."

Tutu and the Dalai Lama resorted to the long distance conversation after the South African government failed to issue Tibet's spiritual leader with a visa in time to travel to Cape Town for the birthday celebrations.

      Civil_Rights - 2011-10-08 14:51

Yeah they should have equal power, we living in a new democratic era. Afterwards we can remove the corrupt politicians and put them in the kitchen. I can see Beyonce and TUTU making a remix of "Girls Run the World".

      Andrew - 2011-10-08 15:54

      they do!!! very subversively.....

      Wolwiele - 2011-10-08 16:00

Tutu should rather comment on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17m8OnHC7dQ

      Civil_Rights - 2011-10-08 16:14

If you want equality for both women and men than let a hermaphrodite rule the world. But would you rather have a banana republican who easily succumbs to flu, rule the world rather than a woman? Julius has periods every time he opens his mouth. Let us not generalize not all women nor men are corrupt.

    No they shouldn't.

      steven - 2011-10-08 14:53

Agreed, only an unmarried priest would think woman is more peaceful. He definitely had not lived even one month through the mood shifts.

      Grant - 2011-10-08 15:40

@ Steven. You should read more pal! Earlier in his speech (also reported on news24) Tutu paid compliments to his wife of 56 years, Leah

      Phillip - 2011-10-09 03:15

Agreed. The saying "Hell has no fury like a woman scorned" did not come out of nothing. They would actually seduce men into war just to see them fight. How many times have women played men against one another. Woman or man, it doesn't matter. If they want to war, they will war. Tutu should get all that crap off his chest, for his days are also numbered...

  • Wolwiele - 2011-10-08 14:42

Woman like Winnie? What a joke Tutu.

      leonard - 2011-10-08 18:02

@Wolwiele.......Every one keeps on harping about Winnie.Just look at the inept.incompetent women ministers in the current evil ANC crop, to see how certainly women should not rule.Well,in the South African context in any event. And no,I am NOT a male chauvanistic pig,I love women, just not those as mentioned by me.Now Helen, that is a totally different kettle of fish.

  • errol.wagner - 2011-10-08 14:53

Dear Archbishop Tutu - what about those millions of mothers who feel nothing about killing their defenseless unborn babies, in what should be the safest place in the world, their wombs? Would they not perpetrate genocide?

      Grant - 2011-10-08 15:45

Heck of a lot more male murderers in the jails than female!

  • PyroSA - 2011-10-08 15:13

Certain women are peaceful, yes, but generalising to such an extent is stupid. Women can be corrupted by power as well.

  • Sbali - 2011-10-08 15:21

Yes they should and I think the late Manto Tshabalala and Gwen Nkabinde-Mahlangu are good examples to make perfect presidents not forgetting Barbie the Advocate!!!

  • Realist - 2011-10-08 15:22

I think the world has seen its share of cruel female rulers/leaders in the past, evil knows no gender. Just look at Queen Mary I (the Bloody Mary):- violently returned England to Catholicism. Queen Elizabeth I (Good Queen Bess):- suppressed Catholicism in the cruelest way possible. Isabella I of Spain - appointed the first Inquisitor General of the inquisition. Ilse Koch (The Witch of Buchenwald): - reveled in torture and obscenity. Irma Grese(The Bitch of Belsen):- she would set dog at inmates, sadistically beat them with a whip and arbitrarily shoot them. and then more recently and closer to home, our own Winnie Mandela.

      skootzie - 2012-01-26 10:20

So, acccording to you (unless I've misunderstood, please correct me if I did) - because we've had cruel female leaders we shouldn't let women rule again? Ok, so what about the men in history? Attila The Hun, Maximilien Robespierre, Ruhollah Khomeini, Idi Amin Dada, Leopold II of Belgium, Pol Pot, Vlad Tepes, Ivan IV of Russia, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin I can go on if you like? By your own thinking the world has seen it's share of cruel male leaders as well, so who should rule? The people you quoted and the people I quoted have no place in modern society thanks to democracy and the "vote of no confidence" law (yay). People keep quoting women from the past and using that as a justification that women should not rule/govern. All I see throughout News24 regarding Tutu's statements about women leading are bigotry, sexism and pure male hubris.

      skootzie - 2012-01-26 10:28

Oh, by the way, with regards to the suppression of Catholicism: "In 1569 a Catholic rebellion in the disadvantaged north of England challenged Elizabeth's rule and was harshly suppressed. After the pope excommunicated Elizabeth in 1570, her regime became less tolerant towards Roman Catholics, and from the 1580s persecutions increased. The Anglican Church was now firmly identified with English patriotism." The suppression, and subsequent persecutions, was brought upon the Catholics by their own actions.

Has the old man gone nuts???? We are already experiencing huge problems with the majority of kids in our country who have no discipline. This is due to the fact that more and more women are appointed in teaching and leadership positions. In general, men do not really respect women in leadership positions. We need strong men to lead this country.

No one gender should rule. Men have their weaknesses and so do women. We should all be put our of our misery by some neutral gender alien species. Women have no idea what makes them happy. Men are power hungry. But wait..don't women love the power hungry men...WHAT DO YOU WANT WOMEN!!!!!....The answer..everything. Plus a cherry on top.

  • Dalai - 2011-10-08 16:08

One of the world's most Politically Correct clerics who are very scared of offending people in the secular world. Jesus, his supposed role model, called a spade a spade! Men and women will not be equal and can never be: we both need each other, we both have our unique roles to play: reversing that order under the guise of political correctness has only bred dire consequences.

1 Timothy 2:12 "And I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent" And make me sammiches? :) I find the bible to be a repulsive piece fictional literature. Women are our equals. Learn some respect.

      KomissarDzerzhinsky - 2011-10-08 17:22

Comrade Damian has it right. Even in the kolkhoz the woman can pull tractor as far as a man and in the party all the politburo members were women, well not really but Comrade Stalin said many good things of women, especially the actresses he met with for cultural reasons. We need people like you to join the party. You can get free advancement after 1 year to director of your own division and your own flat. Just write for us at Pravda.

You refer to 9 women over the entire history of humankind and you imply the Arch is relying on those examples to make his point??????????? Ever heard of a strawman argument. Five from a fictional book written by a bunch of bronze age misogynists??

      Damian - 2011-10-08 20:01

Look no further than Judges 19. 23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, please don’t commit such an evil act, given that this man has come to my home as a guest. Don’t do this disgraceful thing! 24 Here’s my daughter, the young woman, and his secondary wife. Let me send them out, and you can abuse them and do whatever you want to them. But don’t do such a disgraceful thing to this man!” 25 But the men refused to listen to him. So the Levite grabbed his secondary wife and sent her outside to them. They raped her and abused her all night long until morning. They finally let her go as dawn was breaking. “The Bible has a long and unvarying history of discrimination against women. Undoubtedly, no other book has done more to prevent gender equality.”

      KomissarDzerzhinsky - 2011-10-08 21:52

Comrade Damian is correct as he is a Pravda writer for us now. But he must remember that feminism in his western thought is a bourgeois academic notion. True Marxist rejects that and empowers women through work in the kolkhoz and factory.

      Damian - 2011-10-08 23:56

Comrade KomissarDzerzhinskyKov, lol. stfu. Just because marxism promotes atheism, doesn't quite make them the same thing. "Without religion, good people will do good things. Evil people will do evil things, but it takes religion for good people to do evil". Besides, I haven't accepted your offer yet - I was lurking at your mail order brides section earlier, and I found no evidence of woman that can pull tractors. Or has plowing experience :(

Although I was just thinking that while there are so many inspirational women out there - the recent peace prize winners, Aung San Suu Kyi, and so many others, past and present, thanks to the ANC, we have Sheryl Cwele, Winnie Mandela and all the other crooks.... Bottom line - women SHOULD rule the world - but not those who have already been infected by corrupt, racist, criminal organisations.

  • KomissarDzerzhinsky - 2011-10-08 22:00

Evolution made women bear children and stay home and raise them while it made men strong, and be able to plan the next hunt, defense from enemy tribe or predators or finding of shelter, looking for next hunting ground etc. Also women are vulnerable while pregnant and hormones influence their mental state more then men. These are scientific facts. Women are not equal to men in those regards although men can't reproduce so men are not equal in that regard. There is no indication that women would make the world better if they ruled - and of course they already rule because we know that behind most men is a woman and she controls his purse strings. Don't blame religion or evolution for this, that's just the truth and bourgeois pseudo liberalism won't change it. Still we can accept our women workers as equals as to how many buckets of coal they can carry compared to us or how many days they are functional every month when not breast feeding, pregnant or having PMS. Comrade Lenin would agree. But in theory I am all for equality, just in practice there are scientific challenges and effects of biology which oppose theoretical idealism.

      Damian - 2011-10-09 01:17

How about we agree on Social Equality? "Social equality is a social state of affairs in which all people within a specific society or isolated group have the same status in a certain respect. At the very least, social equality includes equal rights under the law, such as security, voting rights, freedom of speech and assembly, and the extent of property rights. However, it also includes concepts of economic equity, i.e. access to education, health care and other social securities. It also includes equal opportunities and obligations, and so involves the whole of society." I don't see how scientific challenges, nor biological or genetic variations should oppose any of the above mentioned theoretical idealism's.

      Damian - 2011-10-09 01:31

I agree we can't blame religion for men being different to women, but what justification is there for honour killings, women being stoned, arranged marriages, acid blinding and disfiguring? Prepubescent girls sold to Muslims? I'm not saying we should go burn down the churches or Mosque's either, but a little enlightenment goes a long way. Religion is far more a prohibiting factor to gender equality, than scientific challenges or biological differences.

some classic comments! hahahahahha but love the men who realise that women do rule even if they do so unobtrusively. as one male friend said to my husband - you know what, we THINK we are in charge. oh, and is it not now medically proven that men also have pms and menopause but they are in denial? having said all that, what woman wants the job of being in charge of a country. hell no, our menfolk at home give us a hard enough time. i mean, they just don't listen and do as they are told often enough. they should know by now that an obedient husband contributes to peace in the home!! ;)
