Cape Town - The organisers of a religious event in Woodmead, Northern Johannesburg, where 25 cars caught fire, don't suspect any foul play, a report said on Friday.

Eyewitness News reported that it was initially thought that children playing with fireworks may have started the fire, but officials suspect that dry grass may have caught alight in the scorching sun and sparked the blaze.

Sapa reported that most of the cars belonged to Muslim men who had gathered at Mia's Farm for a weekend of spiritual rejuvenation.

Emergency services first received a call about the fire at 11:45, and by 14:00 the blaze had been extinguished. No injuries were reported.

EWN reported organisers describing the incident as an "act of God".

"We take this as an act of God - we are only thankful that no one was hurt."

EWN also reported emergency services as saying that the event's organisers could not be blamed, as precautions were taken.

"Our fire safety officers would have to come to check if fire extinguishers here are in place," a spokesperson was quoted as saying.
