Woolies facing wrath over hot cross buns

2012-03-29 09:26

Cape Town - Woolworths is facing criticism from a few Christians for putting a Halaal certification mark on its hot cross buns, but a bishop has labelled it "nothing more than a storm in a baking pan".

The Cape Times reported on Thursday that people had written e-mails and used social networking sites to voice disapproval of the use of a Muslim mark on a food that had special significance for Christians.

One Christian wrote on Woolworths Facebook wall: “Ja, its sad to hear the woolies we supported all these years turned their backs on Christians.

“Really disappointed. Lucky we received that email, man its spreading like a wild fire. Proud to say a few people I know are boycotting W, including me [sic].”

Another wrote: “I hate woolworths... How can you do that to the Christians, I hope that God will have mercy on you. And dnt be surprised if your shops run bankrupt.. I will pray to my living God and you will see what he is capable of! [sic]”

SA Catholic Bishops' Conference spokesperson Chris Townsend said people were overreacting and needed to be more understanding.

"Hot cross buns are only a symbol, and not a central tenet of Christianity. There are a lot more weighty issues to deal with in SA than a few 'hot cross Christians'," he was quoted as saying.

The food chain apologised for the upset and said it would release separate buns in future - non-Halaal certified hot cross buns and Halaal certified spiced buns.

I see the conspiracy. They are sub'tly trying to imply that the jews have nailed Muhammed to the cross as well.

      Ask - 2012-04-01 11:38

Boet, the only conspiracy is you... a conspiracy with no theory... what are you insinuating by saying that the Jews nailed to the cross... AS WELL...

If you look for something you're going to get it,look for a halaal sticker, you'll find it... So stop looking!!! Get a life, hot cross buns, easter eggs etc does not really have anything to do with Christianity, its a way for people to make a lot of money, the same as Christmas. Take the time you take to read labels and go out to do good, leave Woolies alone!

You mean we Christians need to be understanding, just like the muslims are? Or you all forgotten the carry with the muslims and the meat packaging already............

      Ask - 2012-04-01 11:02

You are one helluva Skebberish or Skebberesh... one look at you; wow, I would place ALL the signs from all religions including Atheists on your food packages... and charge you a toll fee ...

To whom (originates) does the cross buns belongs to?...*confused*

  • Chris - 2012-04-01 08:44

make me wonder: In Iran they make an Eeid Cookie, I wonder if the muslims would object if the christians put a cross on the eid cookie.

      Thapelo - 2012-04-01 09:02

this bloody christian, god gave them food now they demand symbols

      Ask - 2012-04-01 10:56

Don't wonder, you may get lost ... ask the Iranians... you may pay more for fuel...

  • Thapelo - 2012-04-01 09:31

jesus must be happy up there, watching so called christian picking what type of food to eat as if jesus was not gonna choose a cross with nails than eating those buns

  • Michael - 2012-04-01 09:57

how about a pork fillet roti and bacon samoosas cant wait!!!

      Ask - 2012-04-01 10:50

Sounds like a good idea... the only problem is your food taste like crap; perhaps you should get an Indian partner. Boet, you'll make lot's of money. The recipes are complicated... Woolies can market it under the non-halaal section for 'Christians' that have issues...

  • kconradie - 2012-04-01 10:16

We are paying more for food BECAUSE it has the Halaal certification. This is for a small percentage of the population. It has been well documented that there are 4 'certification bodies' and they make lots of money out of this scam.. It all came out when Halaal pork was sold in the shops...

      Ask - 2012-04-01 10:58

Surely, you don't have halaal issues in the Northern suburbs... maybe you should move more inland... if the problem continues... and I have news for you, prices aint coming down...

Fellow Christians the good book says......It is not what goes into your mouth that defiles you but what comes out of it. There are more pressing issues to worry about focus your attention rather on the Great Commission

Hot Cross buns Symbolic of Easter. Did Jesus eat hot cross buns before he died? hot cross buns is a money making skeem and if you are a Christian you should realize hot cross buns has nothing to do with the true meaning of Easter. if you are worried about hot cross buns then you dont know the meaning of Easter spend more time in your church instead of worrying what the world is doing.

To my knowledge Easter is a Christian celebration but interestingly I noticed that all Easter products like Easter eggs and literally everything else in my food cupboards and fridge has got Halaal labels on it. It is expected of us to respect all people and beliefs, yet we are purchasing these products daily and fully supporting it. Please check all your food products at home and then ask yourself why we as Christians have to endure buying almost all products with a Halaal labels. I say on principle we should boycott these suppliers since there is no respect for the Christian belief.

ridiculous beyond words - is this what we have found to bicker about! and yes easter is not a christian celebration - its pagan to the goddess ishtar hence the eggs. get an education for goodness sake. Yours truely A Follow of Christ - not a follower of Hot Cross Buns!
