Woolies facing wrath over hot cross buns

2012-03-29 09:26

Cape Town - Woolworths is facing criticism from a few Christians for putting a Halaal certification mark on its hot cross buns, but a bishop has labelled it "nothing more than a storm in a baking pan".

The Cape Times reported on Thursday that people had written e-mails and used social networking sites to voice disapproval of the use of a Muslim mark on a food that had special significance for Christians.

One Christian wrote on Woolworths Facebook wall: “Ja, its sad to hear the woolies we supported all these years turned their backs on Christians.

“Really disappointed. Lucky we received that email, man its spreading like a wild fire. Proud to say a few people I know are boycotting W, including me [sic].”

Another wrote: “I hate woolworths... How can you do that to the Christians, I hope that God will have mercy on you. And dnt be surprised if your shops run bankrupt.. I will pray to my living God and you will see what he is capable of! [sic]”

SA Catholic Bishops' Conference spokesperson Chris Townsend said people were overreacting and needed to be more understanding.

"Hot cross buns are only a symbol, and not a central tenet of Christianity. There are a lot more weighty issues to deal with in SA than a few 'hot cross Christians'," he was quoted as saying.

The food chain apologised for the upset and said it would release separate buns in future - non-Halaal certified hot cross buns and Halaal certified spiced buns.

Good Day my fellow religious patrons. Please, if you had simply taken the time to ask a Halaal eating friend, they would gladly have told you that that little sticker is just an information sticker. It does nothing except let people know there are no ingredients that are contrary to a specific diet, contained in the buns. Much the same as you might find "Wheat free" or "Contain nuts" on any other product. Please donot give Woolies more ways to increase their prices by raising such ridiculous objections. Secondly, a hot cross bun has no place in your rich Christian heritage. It's just a bun. It's kind of displaying double irrational to be sending those comments and emails to Woolies....

  • annemarie.auret - 2012-03-29 13:07

What does hot-cross buns have to do with Jesus anyway? It is a man-made tradition!

      annemarie.auret - 2012-03-29 13:17

I mean the hot-cross buns is a man made tradition.

  • hkonigk - 2012-03-29 13:08

  • Jacques - 2012-03-29 13:10

Aaaah. So this is where the hot cross bun and religious experts hang out.........

  • Peter - 2012-03-29 13:11

I think the people that are complaining should get a life anyway and something more constructive to do than read labels on Hot Cross Bun packets.

  • rethea.deetlefs - 2012-03-29 13:11

    How utterly utterly pathetic.

  • Patti - 2012-03-29 13:12

Its okif they don't want them cross buns - more for us

  • Evagrey - 2012-03-29 13:14

This is news? Are you joking? >.<

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-03-29 13:16

Take the cross off of them and sell them as current buns.

      rianette.kemp - 2012-03-29 16:02

unless they are 3 days old, not very current then ;)

  • Jasmyn - 2012-03-29 13:17

what a ridiculous bun fight. just came back from a child that has no water to drink and her main concern is she can't keep her school uniform clean and this is what makes news! Get a hold of reality!

  • Rohin - 2012-03-29 13:17

$%$#* hell - is there not enough real issues for us to deal with in our lives without having to get our panties in a knot over a friggin piece of baked goods.

  • Jasmyn - 2012-03-29 13:19

This makes news! It's literally a bun fight. Just came out of diepsloot where a child has no running water and food. All you "religious" people could maybe spend your time outside of woollies and assisting people like your prophets asked you to.

  • Jacomi - 2012-03-29 13:21

OMW.. I don't think God will be offended if Muslims eat hot cross buns.. really.. in this case poor display of Christian love, tolerance and acceptance.. it's just buns, they're not burning a cross and cursing God and/or Christians. Get perspective. And yes, as Marions suggests.. get a life.

  • Ikraam - 2012-03-29 13:22

ROFL What is these buns are made by muslims

  • celeste.rsa - 2012-03-29 13:23

Seriously, this was "news" enough to make the headlines on News24?? Or is it just another opportunity for Christian-bashing which seems to be the norm on here these days. PS: Woolworths hot cross buns are over-priced and not that good at all - I prefer those from Spar!

      Micres - 2012-03-29 14:05

      Coimbra makes the BEST ones!

  • Debra - 2012-03-29 13:24

It's Christians like the ones mentioned in this article which give the rest of us a bad name. In all honesty WHO CARES if there is a halaal sticker on your hot cross buns? Get over yourself, please! Do they have a problem with the meat being halaal? I bet they eat that without any thought or pseudo guilt.

  • Daniel - 2012-03-29 13:24

Do you religious people have nothing better to give a sh*t about? If people used HALF the energy from complaining about this to do constructive things we might have been able to live on a different planet already. But no, my hot cross buns are halaal.

  • Gordon - 2012-03-29 13:25

I was disappointed at Woolies too. I couldn't find the warm happy buns anywhere!

  • andreviljoenjoubert - 2012-03-29 13:27

Hot cross buns! Hot cross buns! One ha' penny, two ha' penny, Hot cross buns! If you have no Christians, Give them to the Muslims One ha' penny, Two ha' penny, Hot Cross Buns!

  • LongSword - 2012-03-29 13:27

U still think Juju is the craziest.

  • LIZZ.ElizabethStander.SMITH6 - 2012-03-29 13:30

Well then, how about putting the halaal stickers on Jewish Matzos as well? Or better still, how about putting a 'cross' sign on all Halaal foods? Or maybe they should just put the halaal, kosher and Christian stickers on all foods!! That way they wouldn't have a problem and the food would be edible for the entire human race. Do you think the muslims would agree to this? Liz

      Micres - 2012-03-29 14:07

A Haalaal sticker is a dietary indicator, as is a kosher sticker. Your comment makes no sense.

  • errol.d.cason - 2012-03-29 13:31

Seems I missed the part in the bible where Jesus took the HOT CROSS BUN, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body..........some people have to much free time on their hands!

  • Refiloe - 2012-03-29 13:32

hot cross bun and Redbul for lunch. Iam a Christian. bt dmn wats up with the over reactins. ie u dnt like it dnt buy the bun and stop cryng. sis y judge and we cll ourselfs Christians.

  • Tyrrell - 2012-03-29 13:41

First I'm hearing of it.. Not even a whisper of this from my Christian community. Where are all these outraged Christians hiding?

  • Sharlene - 2012-03-29 13:42

Christians should research where the hot cross bun comes from before claiming it how pathetic they are just looking for a media hype of rubbish. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Budists, Cathlics, Wiccan's eat those hot cross buns with loads of butter and a good cup of coffee hahahahahahaha :-)

  • Patsy - 2012-03-29 13:42

What a load of BS!!!!! Good for Chris Townsend. Don't we have bigger problems to deal with in S. A. than a misplaced symbol. Just as well there wasn't a Kosher symbol as well. Oh wow, forgot Jesus was Jewish sorry about that!!

  • nkulekweni - 2012-03-29 13:45

Unbelievable. Why all this unnecessary hatred?

  • Robsschele - 2012-03-29 13:45

A while back there was also a big story about a shop chain that removed Christian magazines from their shelves. Cannot remember if it was also Woolies.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-29 15:36

Why should Christians have their magazines on the shelf and no other? Superior much?

      Robsschele - 2012-03-30 11:46

Who said there was no other magazine than Christian on the shelves. As far as I am concerned they can put all kinds (except pornography) on the shelves. The thing is that some shops have no concern for all of their customers. See that Christians are satisfied with your service and also your Muslim customers etc. etc.

  • Chris - 2012-03-29 13:45

I am Christian too and I think this is ridiculous, what has the hot cross bun got to do with Christianity, I mean every baker sells them and has there own recipe including halal bakers, so to all those uptight Christians out there, get a life.

  • pat.dickens2 - 2012-03-29 13:49

91 000 seals are violently and savagely beaten to death every year in Namibia. A bull gets tortured to death by the Zulus in a peculiar initiation ceremony that involves gouging its eyes out, ripping out its tongue, breaking its tail, tying knots in its penis and squeezing its testicles until they burst. We have people who are forced into sexual slavery and we are a major center for human trafficking. Where are the Christians? Why are they not shouting and fighting these very real human and animal rights abuses? Oh... too busy arguing over a bun.

  • vessela.hobson - 2012-03-29 13:51

    this is a joke

  • Pulverturm - 2012-03-29 13:51

I would comment, but it will probably be removed...

  • lester.pillay - 2012-03-29 13:54

Dear fellow christians! the symbolic use of a bun or the ingredients of it in no way or form takes away the significance of easter! It does not change what Jesus did on the cross! a bun cannot offend anyone its just a bun!!! realise the celebration of what jesus did for us cannot be tainted because the bun has now had a blessing on it...please stop wasting your time trying fight a battle that has absolutely no out working of grace to the world!lets bring Glory to God by our actions to a world that is in need of his grace...not because there is a sticker on a bun...all it does is further the worlds view of knowing followers of Christ for what we are against and not what we for...we have the good news of the gospel...

  • Lynn - 2012-03-29 13:55

Oh get a grip South Africans! Truly! *shakes head*

  • James - 2012-03-29 13:56

I am disgusted that Woolworths is putting Halaal stickers on their hot cross buns. Hot cross buns are obviously Christian since they have a cross on them. I also believe that Muslims should be banned from using addition (+) in maths since this symbol is just a cross which is obviously a symbol of Christianity.

      Fatima - 2012-03-29 14:39

DOF DOF DOF ....... i need the ++++++++ so i can add up your stupidity

      rianette.kemp - 2012-03-29 16:09

      @Janine...Indeed they did

      Micres - 2012-03-29 16:29

      ROTFL!!!

  • kotze.ansie - 2012-03-29 13:56

I agree Marion. That is why we Christians pray before eating. Thank you for the food and bless the food we eat, Amen. Simple and easy, your good to go.

  • nanda.pita1 - 2012-03-29 13:57

well firstly I have no idea why they are called HOT cross buns - thats a marketing ploy lol ... they are never hot unless we make them hot ourselves. And quite frankly i feel even the buns are CROSS with themselves right now. Easter will never be the same again without our little buns

  • Breinlekkasie - 2012-03-29 14:00

Just put every religion's symbol on the buns. Well, I guess if all the 'offence' substances are removed from the recipe only water will be left.

  • Fatima - 2012-03-29 14:11

AT JAMES ....if they banned the muslims from the (+) in maths how am i going to caluculate how stupid you really are.....???? after all i need the + sign to add to yoru stupidity !!!

      Marion - 2012-03-29 14:52

Surely James was just being sarcastic?

      Micres - 2012-03-29 16:30

      It was a joke! Eish!

  • Alan - 2012-03-29 14:13

What are they taking out of the mix to make it Halaal , would like to know.

  • Andrew - 2012-03-29 14:15

oopsy... religion once again dislpaying the mark of its primitive origins. I would threaten to boycott church in protest, but no-one would notice

  • Ben - 2012-03-29 14:16

Only bigots and fascists would make a scene about something like this....

  • Leendert - 2012-03-29 14:22

    Yawn!!

  • stoute.babuseng - 2012-03-29 14:27

Typical Christians, i'm glad i saw the light a longtime, whats next boycotting MacDonald's and Nando's? What i'm more glad about is that i don't have to go to the church and listen to them whining the whole day LOL

  • mc.sonnekus - 2012-03-29 14:28

It's because of this sort of needless non-sensical prejudice that religion fosters that I distance myself as far as possible from all faith based belief systems.
