Wrong op costs baby her legs

Johannesburg - A two-year-old girl who was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital for burn marks on her hands landed up having both legs amputated, the Gauteng department of health and social development said on Sunday.

"The toddler...was admitted at Far East Rand Hospital and later transferred to Charlotte Maxeke Academic hospital to be treated for burns on her hands. Instead she ended up with her legs being amputated, " said departmental spokesperson Mandla Sidu in a statement.

He said the Gauteng Health MEC has called a meeting for Monday with hospital personnel about the incident of negligence to which Thembisa Kometsi from Daveyton was victim.

"Those found to be guilty of negligence...disciplinary action will taken against them which may lead to dismissal," said Mahlangu.

The MEC has also called on officials from the Rahima Moosa hospital to explain the "insensitive treatment" of a family whose baby had died last week.

Yasser Marere issued a media statement about his experience at the hospital after his baby son died during birth of asphyxia.

When he wanted to see the baby he was allegedly made to search through the bodies of 40 dead babies in the hospital mortuary.

Gail says... If as is claimed in this column she succeeded in her suit against a previous woman he married under Customary Law that ends to indicate that the Justice system does not view the customary law as legally binding under law as a Customary marriage. This then indeed begs the question as Leonard Bloch asks of why JZ;s customary wives are all recognised and given perks since under law they are only married to him under customary law and therefore the allowances they receive as his wives should not apply to more than one. If he wants them all to benefit then he would have to legalise polygamy first and then marry them under the Marriage Act before they receive a dime from the taxpayer in allowances. As taxpayers we should not have to pay extra because he is a polygamist; he should have to come out on the same salary as any Pres. with one wife and a limited number of children. A country is like a complex business - if the boss is paid extra for mistresses and illegitimate children then so should the underlings have that right. I can just see that happening!
