Yengeni cop found guilty

2009-11-30 11:01
Cape Town - Former Goodwood police station commander Siphiwo Hewana was on Monday found guilty of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Hewana appeared in the Parow Regional Court before magistrate Elsa van Zyl.

He was found not guilty on two other counts - conspiracy to commit perjury and interfering with police officials in the execution of their duties.

His trial stemmed from the arrest in November 2007 of Tony Yengeni, former chief whip of the ANC on a charge of drunken driving.

In order to protect Yengeni, Hewana ordered the two arresting police officials to change the time of Yengeni's arrest from the early hours to 21:00 that night.

This was because Yengeni had been on parole at the time and was not supposed to be out after 21:00.

The case continues with sentencing procedures.
