Johannesburg - Young South Africans appear to be very romantically inclined with 61% planning to celebrate Valentine's Day, a survey revealed on Wednesday.

About half had already made plans for the day with the rest still undecided as to how they were going to celebrate, consumer insights company Pondering Panda said.

Only 31% of the respondents said they were not going to celebrate Valentine's Day because they would be on their own.

"It would appear that for young South Africans, love really does make the world go round," spokesperson Shirley Wakefield said.

"What is perhaps surprising is the enthusiasm shown by both young men and women for Valentine's Day. Some think that men are more cynical about romance, but this does not appear to be so. Romance, and all it entails, is important across all demographics."

A total of 15 452 people aged between 13 and 34 were surveyed.

According to the survey, flowers were not an essential part of the day.

Only 12% were planning on celebrating by giving flowers, while 40% were planning on giving romantic gifts other than flowers to their loved ones.

Forty percent of respondents saw no need for flowers or other gifts, saying that just being with someone who cared was enough for them.
