Johannesburg - A 21-year-old mother was brutally beaten allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, despite having a protection order against him and two domestic violence cases pending, The Times reported on Thursday.

Michael Padayachee was out on R5 000 bail in June on an intimidation charge brought by Tina Mbili, the mother of his child and high school sweetheart whom he allegedly kicked and punched in the head and face a week ago in Verulam, north of Durban.

The newspaper reported Padayachee allegedly attacked Mbili as the police were supposedly looking for him in connection with the attempted murder of their 17-month-old daughter. The baby was badly bruised when he allegedly threw her over a gate in July.

The attack which left Mbili with severe head and facial injuries and fighting for her life, happened as South Africans celebrated Women's Month.

At the same time parliamentarians were calling on the police to comply with the Domestic Violence Act and to improve their treatment of victims of domestic violence.

Police Ministry spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said Mbili's family should go to court to complain that the protection order had been violated.

"The court issued the protection order, therefore victims should ask the court to instruct the police to arrest the suspect and the police will then definitely make the arrest," Mnisi was quoted as saying.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said that another attempted murder and robbery docket had been opened citing Padayachee but an arrest had not been made.

He said Padayachee was wanted in connection with the attempted murder of his daughter and police had been looking for him since July.
