Mbombela - A 41-year-old man found guilty by the Nelspruit Regional Court of raping his daughter has been lambasted by the magistrate, who said he wasn't worth being a father.

Magistrate Willie Wilkens said the decision by the Mbombela man to fight the rape charge, while knowing that DNA samples taken by police had come back positive, put his daughter on trial and tried to make her a liar.

"That humiliated her. You robbed your child of her innocence and destroyed her memories of you. She won't forget it for the rest of her life," Wilkens said.

"I still love him. But...I will never forget, I feel humiliated, very much. I trusted him very much," the girl testified.

Wilkens said the man had robbed his daughter of her innocence and destroyed her memories of him.

"She won't forget it for the rest of her life. You have severely humiliated her," Wilkens said.

"You planned to rape your own child, which is worse than being raped by a stranger. You are not trustworthy and you are not worthy a father. You acted like a criminal," he said.

Wilkens said the accused could have been proud of having such a beautiful young daughter, but he chose to destroy her life.

He said all boys and girls want their fathers to protect them from criminals.

Wilkens further noted that in his court alone there were 213 rape cases still outstanding.

State prosecutor Magda Marais said the accused deserved a severe punishment as he did not show any remorse.

Wilkens sentenced the accused to 15 years imprisonment and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
