Joburg buses crash head-on

A collision between two buses on Jan Smuts Avenue and Lower Park in Johannesburg has left two people dead and about 100 others injured.

Johannesburg - A six-month pregnant woman who was trapped in a bus that collided with another bus in Zoo Lake on Friday has died, paramedics and Johannesburg Metro Police confirmed to News24.

The driver of one of the buses, a double decker, also died in the crash.

The other bus driver has been freed from the wreckage, says News24’s Mpho Raborife from the scene.

“A metro bus tow truck has arrived and is about to pull the buses apart because one is on top of the other. This is why they are struggling to free the driver,” said Raborife.

There were 66 passengers in both buses.

The crash happened at around 07:00.

Minnaar said Jan Smuts Avenue has been closed in both directions until the scene is cleared. Lower Park Road is also closed.

Motorists were urged to use Oxford Road instead.
