Zuma: Mine shooting to be probed

2012-08-17 19:11

.Rustenburg - A commission of inquiry would be set up to investigate the causes of a shooting that left 34 people dead in the North West, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.

"We have to uncover the truth about what happened here. In this regard, I've decided to institute a commission of inquiry.

"The inquiry will enable us to get to the real cause of the incident and to derive the necessary lessons too," he said, according to AFP

"This is a shocking thing."

    probe yourself first !!!!

      mundu.olewega - 2012-08-17 20:55

Yea, ask why he left the country for a jaunt while he knew the sh!7e was going to hit the fan? Zuma fiddles while SA burns. Much more important things to do like turning museums into kraals.

      boltonbarry - 2012-08-17 22:12

Hope he doesn't probe himself with that spear

  • ronald.jeffs - 2012-08-17 19:20

The probe will be resolved by 2030, just like Eskom, Telkom, The new government projects, etc... whats the point... nothing ever get done anyway.

  • grace.andtruth.77 - 2012-08-17 19:20

Mr Zuma... You lead by example! You and your government have no regard for the law so why should your sheep? Bunch of hooligans... I'm sorry people died but they came armed ready to shoot and that's how they died. There is still plenty more to come!!!

      grace.andtruth.77 - 2012-08-17 19:23

Well done Police Commissioner, maybe you'll restore some law and order in this country!

      lyn.ward.73 - 2012-08-17 19:23

      well said Grace

  • chadjason.wilson - 2012-08-17 19:21

I am shocked at the response to this incident from news24 readers. The comments and thumbs up from others are deplorable. I am saddened to call myself a South African today. Do we live in the dark ages? Is this how we administer the death penalty? May those that laud this approach by the police find it in their hearts to understand that they have erred. Only a vengeful or evil hand can clap to this beat...... It was a massacre..... The evidence will not lie. God forgive us all

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-08-17 19:39

Wilso, I agree with some of what you are saying. However, How many probes are into the farm deaths and murders in our country. On a good day it is more than 20. And the ambulances also does not arrive, the policy sometimes don't arrive, and nobody makes too much of a fuss about that. The core of this issues is not the unions, the strikers, the police. The core of the problem is that our country has fallen in a state of "anything goes" and you know what, our leaders are leading by example.

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-08-17 19:43

And my grammer and spelling is terrible:-( But I am sure you get the point....

      liana.loots - 2012-08-17 19:52

Muti laden masses, 10 feet tall and bullet proof. How else would you have reacted when faced with that menacing crowd? Why are you shocked by the readers responses WilsoWill? we live in the dark ages (again) and this is Africa. Don't be a hypocrite.

      chadjason.wilson - 2012-08-17 19:59

Through our actions the world can change. What did you do today to make a difference? What did I do? That is the probing question that really matters. And applauding this act..... I do not believe it achieves anything good....

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-08-17 20:06

We should not applaud this act, I believe many of us agree - we should not applaud any act of violence - but my friend, we cannot turn a blind eye to what is going on in SA. If the core of the apple is rotten, the whole apple ends up rotting.

      charmaine.paterson1 - 2012-08-17 20:32

And if you were a policeman and they came at you armed with pangas and firearms? The same protesters that had already murdered 10 people? They had tried tear-gas and rubber bullets. These were not innocent protesters, they were armed killers. As a mother and a daughter, my heart bleeds, but I understand the reaction of the police.

  • jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-08-17 19:22

The only thing that should be probed is that big head of yours cos how someone can have such big space for a brain and be soooooo stupid baffels' me!

  • frederick.thipe - 2012-08-17 19:23

That's all u do, PROBE urself!!!!!!

  • zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-08-17 19:24

Why are the Police utilizing live ammunition ?? Arrest these Rambo cops and throw them in with the Boeremag volk.

      grace.andtruth.77 - 2012-08-17 19:27

But its ok for strikers to be armed... With illegal firearms?

      schalkwbu31ger - 2012-08-17 19:49

What must they use? If you are brave / stupid enough to take on some force that have the law and power behind them then you must bleed. If you can't have a civil way of doing things don't complain. After the strikers have already killed 10 people you think that they will only kiss or hug the police?

      liana.loots - 2012-08-17 20:02

      ...zapadela, I pity you.

  • kim.buren - 2012-08-17 19:25

Oh please !!! Your own cabinet needs to be probed

  • Muffin_man_can - 2012-08-17 19:26

How is what happened yesterday different from what happened at Sharpville? The police acted out of self defense then as they did yesterday.

      liana.loots - 2012-08-17 20:36

Yea right!! How quickly we forget.

      Muffin_man_can - 2012-08-17 21:07

How quickly you become brain washed Liana?

  • elvis.nkoana - 2012-08-17 19:26

A very good and well thought out move. Of course, i hope we can learn lessons from this sad incident.

      Muffin_man_can - 2012-08-17 19:41

Well though out? Haha that's funny! How is it different from how they usually work?

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-17 19:50

Pity the media and citizens had to do their thinking for them. This could have been averted if someone did something a week ago

  • justin.massyn - 2012-08-17 19:27

It's too late , they have died, because of your incompetence you waste of oxygen. These men should not have died, you, yes you mr pres should be leading from the front, yet you toss around over seas never to be seen as a dicision maker. I hold YOU RESPONSIBLE, you useless pr1ck!!!!!! You don't care about your people, the same people that gave you power. Stand up and be a man, or stand in line and be judged you horrible person. You are a a disgrace, you have soo much power yet you stand quiet as they die, squandering your power on rubbish. Shame on you!!

      Xulu.Thulany.Xaba - 2012-08-17 19:37

Your anger towards ZUMA is clouding your judgment!!

      thozi - 2012-08-17 20:00

@justin.massyn I don't always agree with Mr Zuma... but what has he done in this particular instance to face your absolute wrath? For all you know, you might as well hold him responsible for the recent series of shootings in the US...

      mundu.olewega - 2012-08-17 21:02

@ Xulu...you should be angry. Zuma was out galivanting overseas while this thing was escalating. He could have called the unions to order. Now we have this and I hear it is big news overseas. Kiss investment goodbye, kiss jobs goodbye, kiss your ass goodbye...in that order.

  • Teuneman - 2012-08-17 19:27

Yah yah. Probe this, probe that. Just use a condom.

      jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-08-17 19:35

      Har har!!!

      kim.buren - 2012-08-17 19:38

      Lmfga Teuneman

      liana.loots - 2012-08-17 20:08

      har har from me too

      lownabester - 2012-08-17 20:23

      hehehehehe

  • Michael - 2012-08-17 19:29

I like urgent respond, he must tell people the truth like Riah Phiega that when police gives an order, no one must try to shoot at them since they dont carry children water toy guns.

  • sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-08-17 19:37

I saw footage of the incident on tv, and one of the cops picked up a handgun dropped by one of the protesters (apparently one taken from a murdered police officer earlier in the week) - is that a clue for this commission?

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-08-17 19:45

So in other words. You come over a day later and give us your 2c on the matter. The probes started yesterday already mr zuma. I suppose you also need to show that you actually care what happened. Seeing as though election's are around the corner. He.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-17 19:51

      A week later

      jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-08-17 19:53

      True

      charmaine.paterson1 - 2012-08-17 20:18

Exactly. Too little, too late, as always. He should have stepped in earlier this week when the first deaths occurred.

      gregory.jurgens - 2012-08-17 20:28

      Correct jasonpaul. Thumbsup

  • irene.hutchins.1 - 2012-08-17 19:46

The GENERAL who has just been fired, the one with the bid Stetson hat, told the cops to shoot to kill....this is what they have done now, and so many families are grieving....Put people equiped with knowledge into these jobs, do not use the buddy system...we have too many incompetent people in big jobs getting fat salaries...

      mandla.nkosi.792 - 2012-08-17 20:27

Let us face the fact, beeng apolice doesn't mean that u have to wait to be killed,no no no,put urself ino ther situation_ have kids. Wife family to luk out, stupid person come with the panga to kill u,what will u do,u will run away?comon guyz stop provoking police, ther ate human beeng also.About people who have big salarys, the went too school the diserved, the didn't wait for grant, stop luking what other people have, doit for urself

  • msaka.lekhosi - 2012-08-17 19:46

Ja neh... That was conspicuous. Less important to Mr President.

  • sello.papo - 2012-08-17 19:47

south african let me tell u, unless the south african we repent and confess our sins, search our basic humanitarian roots this country will always face violence. Look where there is violence our fellow black people are involved, are we cursed or unfortunity in our own country. I plead in the name of Jesus lets stop violence. Marikana situation is unfortunate and how many commisioner of inquiries wil be established to probe the situations, this commisions are not solving the problem its just another costs to the situation, we need drastic change in our country, where are the leaders who could intervene physical not by releasing statements our leaders they wait first someone to die then they act. All this are the works of poor management from the union, departments to presidential office. Unless my people repent from their sins.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-17 19:54

And unless people start to learn some self-control. We have the finest policies on everything, our Constitution is the best in the world. It all means nothing when people behave like barbarians and pick up nasty sharp weapons the minute things don't go their way.

      mundu.olewega - 2012-08-17 21:06

Repent, but also make sure you dont vote the evil back into power next time round.

  • thozi - 2012-08-17 19:50

Without trying to apportion blame as I don't know the full facts, one thing certain is that I would never be dumb enough to rush police who are armed with automatic rifles while carrying pangas and knob-kerries. More especially after two of their colleagues had died a horrible death two days earlier at the hands of an unruly mob - while trying crowd control using "civil" tactics.

      Michael - 2012-08-17 19:59

Apparently, their union leader went to a sangoma in the eastern cape for muti that turns them invible againts any opponent, thats why they approached police without any fear, people can bo doffy mara man!

  • hugo.sarli - 2012-08-17 19:59

Three commissions to find out why books never got to the classrooms half way down the year.... Another to get to the "bottom of this" Great' lessons will be learn', Mr Zuma hope the families of the dead ones see your point. I DON T.

  • henk.vanrensburg.31 - 2012-08-17 20:03

Luvland must be making a profit with all these probes....

  • neville.chamberlain.509 - 2012-08-17 20:05

I wonder if this would be a properly constituted board of enquiry with INDEPENDANT members or would this be another hack job staffed by cadres and apportioning blame to everybody and everything except those at the heart of this tragedy? Methinks it would be door no 2

  • mtizozo.nsele - 2012-08-17 20:17

Well done mr pres. An independent comission is required urgently. They must also confirm if that this new federation is not affiliated with orther apposition parties. An apwrtein in this country was implimented such that it will always resurface on its own.

      Fikile Magadla - 2012-08-17 20:41

mtizozo i guess that paranoia wont help bring the dead back .

      mundu.olewega - 2012-08-17 21:08

Huh...are you another one of those ANC zombies?

  • patricia.dewet.92 - 2012-08-17 20:19

We must have 20 commisions of enquiries going on at the moment. This is a way to stop doing anything, but wasting money.

  • thabiso.modiga - 2012-08-17 20:19

Dear Mr President,\r\n\r\nOur Saps are not properly trained to handle mass protests and this was evident given yesterday's evidence.\r\n\r\nInquiries will not address the core problem being the incompetence of the police.

  • simon.carter.5836711 - 2012-08-17 20:19

Hey JZ, how about probing all the farm murders?

  • gregory.jurgens - 2012-08-17 20:20

Where were you Zuma ? When our brothers were being gunned down. Why is the country not in mourning, why aren't the flags hanging at Half mast. You don't care it's not your children that are have been shot. A thousand probes won't bring back these men. It won't feed their families. Your wives daily allowance is three times their monthly income. You killed them for wanting to put bread on their families tables.

  • lownabester - 2012-08-17 20:27

The ANC started this, we want, we want, and all their promises, nothing will stop this behaviour except a new Goverment. Bring the DA in. No need to have an commission, just step down and let us chose a new leader.

  • Fikile Magadla - 2012-08-17 20:36

What commision!!!!!this has been happening for the whole week Mr President.you were waiting for 34 people to dieso u can act. u could have sent Soldiers before the bloodshed Now its too late people are dead and they wont come back

  • mosesbongane.sibanda - 2012-08-17 20:43

there is no way for the police to end the life of those people like that, how can pangas fight guns ? HOW CAN THE FAMILY OF THOSE PEOPLE LIVE NOW WITHOUT THEIR LOVES ONE ?

      mundu.olewega - 2012-08-17 21:21

Yea, but if the cops failed to shoot they would have been chop suey!

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-17 21:22

How can their loved ones choose possible death over looking after their families? People need to start THINKING and stop REACTING. We already live in a country where everyone rushes about stabbing, shooting, burning and stoning everything they don't agree with. It's not rational. And we have rational laws and a rational Constitution. The missing link, the part that stops it all from working, is a rational society

  • dolph.moliko - 2012-08-18 07:30

There will always be problems there. 1 Cele came wth his nonsense, remember stomach in chest out? While its good for people to keep fit, I thnk its wrong to employ people of a certain size. 2 In all that he chose to employ fitness over brains. I know of many friends who have legal degrees, paralegal diplomas, investigation degrees, diplomas nd certificates who can't get into the SAPS because of problems wth weight. Ask the army how do they do it. 3 That's the thinking of a grade 12 drivers license. Unless SAPS scrap that away, we going down coz the country is loosing good men and women coz of that. Forgive me if I'm wrong.

  • braamc - 2012-08-18 09:22

You are beyond pathetic. All blame to the ANC thieving government!
