Zuma celebrates Heritage Day

2010-09-24 16:10
President Jacob Zuma received a riveting welcome when he arrived at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, for the main national Heritage Day event.

Thousands of people screamed when Zuma arrived, accompanied by Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana , KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize, and Durban mayor Obed Mlaba.

Three fighter jets and two army helicopters flew over the stadium immediately after Zuma's arrival.

Under the theme "Celebrating 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup Successes: Our Heritage", activities at the stadium began early on Friday morning.

The early part of the event was dominated by religious activities, with different religious groups, represented by their leaders.

People were entertained by various artists, and Zuma was expected to address them.

Zuma arrived slightly late because he was busy at the ANC's national general council

Clips from this year's World Cup matches were also played during the event.

Among dignitaries who attended were United Democratic Movement leader, Bantu Holomisa and Congress of the People leader, Mosiuoa Lekota.
