Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Mauritania president-elect Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz on a successful re-election, the international relations department said on Thursday.

"President Zuma also praised the people of Mauritania for their peaceful demeanour during the presidential elections," spokesperson Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

"To this end, President Zuma said the South African government wished for continued peace, stability, and prosperity for the people of Mauritania."

Aziz won another five-year term during the 21 June election with 82% of the vote, the country's election commission announced on Sunday.

In 2008, Aziz assumed power in a coup and won the election a year later.

"President Zuma is confident that the cordial relations between South Africa and Mauritania will be further strengthened during the second term of President Abdel Aziz," said Monyela.
