Pietermaritzburg - President Jacob Zuma criticised former president Kgalema Motlanthe for comments the latter made to Business Day that the tripartite alliance was dead.

Speaking at the ANC KZN provincial conference at the Royal Showgrounds on Saturday evening, Zuma told delegates that those who have left the ANC should not “throw stones at it”.

“Recently I read an article where one comrade said the alliance is dead. People are exposing themselves … they are politically bankrupt. They left on their own because they thought it was nice out there. It is cold out there,” he said.

Zuma also criticised other former party leaders who had spoken out against the party in the media.

“Some of them were general secretaries but today they are criticising the ANC. They kept quite while they were still in the ANC, they only got wisdom after they had left. If they say the ANC is weak, they must have weakened it.”

“Some of them are pastors, they must go and preach at church and forget about ANC,” he said to loud cheers from the delegates. If they are ANC members, why are they not going to branches to raise these issues? They are cowards. They are afraid of coming here to debate issues,” he said. Visibly infuriated, Zuma warned former leaders that “he was running out of patience”. “Do not provoke us. We may not tolerate it for much longer,” he said.
