Zuma jet deal won't go ahead

2012-07-06 12:15

Johannesburg - The proposed R2bn purchase of a new Boeing 777 jet for President Jacob Zuma will not go ahead, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says.

Speaking at a media conference on Friday morning, she said the procurement process has been cancelled after the offer to purchase lapsed on 15 June.

The $10m deposit will be paid back in full.

She added that a new procurement process will be embarked upon in the future, as there was a need for VIP planes.

The jet would have cost $150m (about R1.26bn) and an extra $80m (about R672.5m) to reconfigure, according to reports.

More to follow.

Isn't it amazing how most african presidents fit into the same groove? Bokassa, Mobutu, Mugabe (he annihilated his airline, LOL!), Idi Amin etc. Zuma was testing the waters relying on the stupidity of the electorate.

What a pity for all the poor residents in their shacks near OR Tambo in Daveyton, Tembisa and Kwathema townships? I'm sure they were all just dying to wave "bucket of water in hand' to the Pres Jet flying over as they prepare samp and chicken feet for dinner

  • leaproach.thekeeper - 2012-07-06 12:34

Worried at not being re-elected this year hey Mr Zuma....but be that as it may, I don't think you will. New jet? NOT! There is nothing wrong with your old one. Boeings last 20 years when used commercially. Yours have not nearly the W&T a commercial jet has.

  • Marius - 2012-07-06 12:35

Yeah right. Wait till after Mangaung then Zoompie will zoom around in his Boeing 777.

True. One thing about the ANC is that they will always have the last word, not the people.

  • glyn.morgan.96 - 2012-07-06 12:45

  • karin.schoeman.9 - 2012-07-06 12:46

BS, our past ministers and presidents have never had the "need" for a VIP jet, why does Zuma "need" one? If you ask me it is more a want than a need situation. Stop wasting our taxp[ayers moeny and rather spend it wisely where it is really needed.

I can bet my seven rands in the pocket that this deal would have gone ahead had the secrecy bill been law in this country. All protocols observed, however , the defence department must ensure and gurantee the teritorial integrity of the republic, this includes the travel and security thereof of the head of state. I support the procurement of this boeng, i may need it in 2019

    Nice picture for Zuma.

  • keith.f.murphy - 2012-07-06 13:12

Get Zuma a nice donkey with a leather drapped wagon and see that he has a 5 litre jet fuel with him and a stick ( Kierrie ) with a round sponge fixed on the end of the kierrie so if he wants jet speed all he need to do is dip the spong in the ject feul stick it up the donkes poepsak and the donkey will pick immediate speed twice as fast as light.

  • keith.f.murphy - 2012-07-06 13:14
