ANC holds rally in Soweto

Nelson Mandela was acknowledged during an ANC rally in Soweto attended by President Jacob Zuma. See the pictures.

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma laid a wreath at Hector Pieterson Memorial Square in Orlando West, Soweto, on Friday.

He was joined by African National Congress leaders in Gauteng.

Gauteng ANC Youth League leader Lebogang Maile and Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau also laid wreaths.

Pieterson was one of the first children shot by apartheid security forces during a protest in the area on 16 June 1976. The day is now marked as "Youth Day".

Afterwards, Zuma went on door-to-door visits in the area.

Children at the Thembeni Day Care Centre sang the national anthem for him.

Small children lined the street holding signs and ANC flags.

Some of the signs read: "We love u Mkhulu Zuma", "Siphilele Mkhulu Madiba (live for us), we love u Madiba", and "Education is key to success".

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane interacted with the children as they waited for Zuma to come past.

Zuma stopped and greeted each child.

The president was expected to address students at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus later in the day.
