Zuma lion posters removed from airport

2012-08-18 12:07

Johannesburg - Posters depicting President Jacob Zuma overseeing a lioness about to be executed with a handgun were removed from the OR Tambo international airport, in Kempton Park, the Beeld newspaper reported on Saturday.

Airports Company SA (Acsa) told Primedia, who put the posters up on behalf of international NGO Avaaz.org, to remove the posters from the pillars of airport's international arrival hall on Friday.

The posters, which were digitally altered to have Zuma's face on it, read: "President Zuma can save her [the lioness's] life."

The posters were part of a campaign to prevent the canned hunting of lions, as well as the sale of their organs to the Far East.

Emma Ruby-Sachs, an Avaaz.org co-ordinator from Canada told the newspaper the organisation would hire a South African lawyer to take the matter to court.

"We will not tolerate this conduct. How can more than 700 000 people's voices just be quietened? "

The organisation said it "had a hunch" that the decision to remove the posters was because of political interference.

Not true! It was false advertising. We all know that apart from blowing taxes on expensive parties and living the high life, Zuma is incapable of successfully doing anything that even remotely resembles doing his job!

      Rudolf - 2012-08-18 12:43

I concur! Now if it was a poster with a 'raped' women lying on the floor and the spear-himself taking a shower; now THAT would have been the poster to have at Johannesburg Internation Airport.

      claudia.meads - 2012-08-18 14:09

If it was Brett Murray instead of a lioness - the ANC would have put the poster up in the buildings of Parliament. South Africa is at the crumbling edge of a bottomless abyss - something not even the National Party could do. It is time for the international community to resume its intervention in SA - the 94 "process" has failed (it is destroying SA), has to be scrapped, a new dispensation has to be negotiated.

Why not? He is a lion of his pride. Or a lion hunter with a mighty spear.

  • neville.chamberlain.509 - 2012-08-18 13:02

WHAT??? Zuma has a job? I thought we just threw tax money at him because we can!!!

      Rudolf - 2012-08-18 13:10

      Not "can" - "must"...

  • horst.muller.7330 - 2012-08-18 13:03

Naturally I don't agree with the posters being removed, it comes under freedom of expression. But I also don't agree with the advertisers who obviously are against canned lion hunting. I don't understand why people would want to kill a lion, but if they are prepared to pay loads of money for it, let them. And in addition if there is a market for the organs, that's even better. Lets satisfy that markets, keeps the poachers out. Right! Here come the thumbs down.

      Anthea - 2012-08-18 13:32

The Far East will not stop until they have consumed every single resource that we have and our Government will not do a damn thing to stop it! Are we going to allow this?

      Wally Walters - 2012-08-18 13:55

Gods creation They will be delt with at a later stage

      horst.muller.7330 - 2012-08-18 17:16

Eh this is great, it went better than I expected, 5 thumbs up and 27 down means there are 16% sane and rational people around. We should form a political party. To patterson: sorry you got the gender wrong. I could also use strong language but find it a bit uncivilised. To anthea: what's the point of having resources if you don't want to sell them? A few lessons in economics are required. To Eugene: since you brought it up, here is a quote from the bible: Geneses 1 verse 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” By farming with lions and harvesting their organs we would be fulfilling gods demand. The same applies to rhino horn, by the way.

      Anthea - 2012-08-18 18:23

Are you happy for them to poach rhinos into extinction, to fish our seas til they are barren , to hunt whales until they are no more,to consume everything until there is absolutely nothing left? The Vietnamese rhino is now extinct, which is why they are now after ours, and you are happy to just let them? It ain't over til its over?

      horst.muller.7330 - 2012-08-19 05:41

well anthea, we are obviously talking past each other. I am not proposing to hunt these animals to extinction. I am talking about farming with them to prevent extinction.

      Anthea - 2012-08-20 11:08

Unfortunately Rhinos are slow breeders and by all accounts our animals could never keep up with the growing demand for their body parts so farming is not ever going to be an option.

  • Zahir - 2012-08-18 13:04

  • tw2066 - 2012-08-19 06:18

Should have had a poster up with SAA holding a gun to a white Pilot cadet applicants head!!

  • carl.lutzer.3 - 2012-08-19 08:23

Funny how the zuma supports are not yet active on this forum supporting old flatface, maybe: 1. they still sleeping after their usual weekend drinking 2. they only have internet access at their cosy government office or perhaps still making babies to ensure they will always have this country's chequebook in their hands.

  • gngaleka - 2012-08-19 11:55

Hail the honourable president Zuma, the people who really matter will raise up their hands and be counted at Mangaung. Whiners have another couple of years to whine. Amandla!!

  • smalefane - 2012-08-19 19:46

In the words of Thabo Mbeki "afrikaaners in SA are settlers of a special kind". You are getting way too comfortable now. Those are our leaders and if you are not happy with them, I'll buy you a one way flight ticket to Australia. Ciao!!! Racist? Not me.

      malcolm.stevens.129 - 2012-09-23 19:48

I doubt you'll find many countries where people are happy with the elected leaders... just doesn't happen. Problem is this: politicians sell one story and then deliver on another.

  • bongani.nsele.58 - 2012-09-24 09:20

may god save the animals of africa...this continent is the only place on earth left with wild life because african people for millions of years conserved them...africans are in tune with nature we don't have crazy hunting clubs with weapons of mass destruction to kill animals for fun....africans don't kill animals for commercial gain, in the last 500 years africa's wild life has faced the wrath of foreign guns ever since they stepped on african soil.....you just have to look at the sofisticated poachers today with their swanky helicopter gunships and their sophisticated distribution channels of rhino horn, ivory, permoleon and other exotic african animals......president zuma does not poach animals....you know who does it....
