Zuma takes to the train

2012-06-14 08:20

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma took a train ride on Thursday morning, arriving at Pretoria's Bosman train station for his journey.

The train was apparently cleared for Zuma while a diesel train ran behind it.

Zuma arrived at the train station at around 07:00 and queued to buy a train ticket.

Early morning commuters stopped and stared in surprise at the huge contingent of police officers, Metrorail staff and numerous news crews.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa and other officials were also at the station.

Zuma's tour, dubbed the "The President's Monitoring Visit 2012" was an opportunity for him to assess public transport in Gauteng during rush hour.

After the Metrorail ride, he was expected to take a Gautrain to Park Station, and then proceed with a ride on a Rea Vaya bus on his way to Soweto.

Oh wow. The prez rode on a train all by himself. What is the point of that? He needs to feel the bodies of other passengers pushing him he needs to stand because there are no seats left, he needs to sit next to a broken window so he can experience being hit by foreign objects. He needs to have his pocket picked or go to the public toilet at the station - once he's done that he will be qualified to make a comment. I am not impressed.

      Champiaan - 2012-06-14 08:51

Instead of engaging in this futile PR excesise, he should propose a name change to Metro rail(seeing that he and his party enjoy that sort of thing) to Apologies rail. Because they apologise every day for late or cancelled trains or some other sort of inconvenience to the commuter but wait! He doesn't know that because his train was cleared and he had a spare to top it all... I'd rather be impressed by a dog who piss on my shoe

      Squeegee - 2012-06-14 08:59

What did they pay per ticket? R600 000 each.

      ahenriquesfernandes - 2012-06-14 09:05

Maybe this was him trying to make a point after all the noise about the flight expenses. Makes me laugh

      sizah.damon - 2012-06-14 09:17

honestly i'm sick of sensationalist articles - makes me sick (did u read yesterday's 210mill air travells & now this...!!) what is going with south african media???

      gerhard.muller.988 - 2012-06-14 09:48

First we had shadow planes, now we have shadow trains. I am beginning to understand why he needs so many wives, he can never make do with just one of anything.

      Christopher - 2012-06-14 09:48

I wonder if anyone got fired or missed a job opprotunity as they could not take the train, as the Pri*k selfishly took the whole train to himself!

  • Phillip - 2012-06-14 08:28

He has been on the gravy train for a long time now, maybe he should take the next train into the sunset...

  • zaaristotle - 2012-06-14 08:36

And what exactly is the point if the train is cleared, with backup? He is not experiencing real life most commuters deal with daily. Just another futile public relations exercise.

  • mdu.hadebe.5 - 2012-06-14 08:41

He should have done this unannounced for this deceiving exercise that Zuma is trying to do.Who is he trying to fool. The next thing he will tell us that we have a perfect public system so E-Tolling can be implemented. He is very predictable.

      Erna - 2012-06-14 09:19

      He thinks we're all idiots!

      thulanit3 - 2012-06-14 09:37

If he doesnt say that,,,then u are a prophet of doom,,,!

      Zukile - 2012-06-14 10:10

      Quite true Mdu.

      alansmartSnr - 2012-06-14 17:59

I would have been impressed if he had done this incognito. But doing this with a whole bunch of police, bodyguards, backup train, he would of course been given VIP treatment, which makes this whole farce a commedy. Would strongly advise him to do it again, under cover, he might just get a wake up call. What a silly and stupid thing for him to do

  • chris.gill.9849 - 2012-06-14 08:42

Didn't the DA ride on the train with commuters and on the bus as well awhile ago to get a feel for what people are going through? Trying to learn some tricks from them Mr Prez?

      Jacqui - 2012-06-14 11:01

Chris, yes the DA travels amongst us pleps. It took so long for Zuma to travel by train because it took so long for them to explain to him what a train is for. Chookachooka chooka. What else are we in for?.The fan dance? After Tina told him what ostrich feathers are used for?.

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-06-14 08:43

Hey Mr President, how about you also buy plane tickets and travel by commercial airlines instead of wasting OUR money on presidential jets and shadow planes?

      Anthea - 2012-06-14 08:59

My thoughts exactly. Maybe when he saw how much those jets have cost us, he decided to try something a bit more affordable. Ah, maybe not.

      Iceberg - 2012-06-14 09:46

Vernon - you made comment of the day :)

      Jacqui - 2012-06-14 11:02

Vernon, he loves shadow planes, he took a shadow train along too. For Pete's sake.

  • kobus.hattingh.5 - 2012-06-14 08:46

He loves trains. especially the Gravy type :)

  • Busani - 2012-06-14 08:49

    *praying it derails*

  • ltisch.amos - 2012-06-14 08:50

I bet he didn't buy his own ticket.

  • Kwisatz - 2012-06-14 08:51

What do white people know about commuting from Soweto to Sandton?

      Erna - 2012-06-14 09:18

I think a lot more than your president.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-06-14 09:21

Not much, but it cant be a nice experience and that is why we want the president to do the route via train and taxi, without blue lights/privileges, with other commuters to be able to understand what need to change to better the system.

      spookhuis - 2012-06-14 09:23

What the hell does Zuma know about it?

      thulanit3 - 2012-06-14 09:50

All they know is 'yada yada yada',,,with their irritating pessimistic attitude,,,!

      Jimmy - 2012-06-14 10:23

All they know is to scream at their overworked underpayed sleep deprived workers that 'you are late, work starts at 6:30AM not 6:31AM ok, now warm my toilet seat'

      mihaip007 - 2012-06-14 10:50

@Jimmy - you remind me of a fellow I used to hire! His name was Jimmy Pale! I have a name for a kind of walk - it is called the Jimmy Pale Walk! It took an average of half an hour to have Jimmy Pale walk the distance of 800 meters from one side of the factory to the other! Whatever the reason, a young man should have no reason to walk as if he is on holiday when he should work - that is why we SHOUT at them...!

      Jacqui - 2012-06-14 11:04

Kwisatz. You mean to tell me commuting between Soweto and Sandton is different than commuting everyhwere else. Why, do you people have to push the train?.

  • Tebz001 - 2012-06-14 08:53

Good for you Zuma...When you are done with your rides, some of us still don't have drinking water and textbooks..

      Anthea - 2012-06-14 09:03

And jobs, decent healthcare, safety & security and hope for the future.

      BabyBash Tshesejane - 2012-06-14 09:22

Good point Tebz001 , kante y was the train cleared for hm and i dnt get y a diesel train had 2 cum behind dat never happens in the mrng , they should have let hm experienced wht everyone is.

      Tebz001 - 2012-06-14 09:26

Its just another way that the ANC is trying to spend the tax money..

trains must be ridden without creating any hullabaloo

  • Megan Andrews - 2012-06-14 10:38

At least our president had escorts, and a carriage to himself, try the morning rush hour, being pushed prodded and pulled, like sardines in a can. holding on for dear life:(

  • Jacqui - 2012-06-14 10:56

What people won't do to get re-elected. I believe he is trying his hand at walking on water but not much luck so far. He keeps trotting on his fingers. I would have been far more impressed if he had travelled under the train.

  • Shilly Maelane - 2012-06-14 11:36

He should've been pushed from an overcrowded train... Then referred to one of our government hospitals and then not operated on because of lack of supplies (thanks to corruption tenders) or CT scans which haven't been working for 3months or more!! Just for a real South African experience!

  • Carol - 2012-06-14 11:37

What a load of BULLDUST!!! Is this a joke? What was the purpose of this particular excercise? Have him ride a train as a normal commuter and see how he likes that. Sure Jacob Zuma rode a train like many of us do but certainly not under the same circumstances. He had bodyguards [obviously], but do we have security? Did he board a filthy coach as many of us do? Was he pestered by vendors and blind beggars on the train as the paying commuters are?

  • russell.w.wright.5 - 2012-06-14 11:45

Two trains for Zuma?....what was the diesel train for.. his spear?

      nokuthula.dube.39 - 2012-06-14 14:22

HE MUST ALSO TRY THE 06:00AM-06:30AM TRAIN FROM LIMINDLELA TO PARK STATION.HE WILL FEEL THE ROUGH FULLY TRAIN.

  • muhammed.bhyat.12 - 2012-06-14 17:26

Its a good initiative. Maybe our president should make this a regular exercise and extend it to government hospitals and schools.

  • Mbavhalelo - 2012-06-14 21:18

I am so tired of white ppl moaning abt president Zuma and de blc gvt accusing de voters of being unwise and uneducated. De black mass will not vote ur white DA till de end of time. We knw how wicked u are u want black votes so u can scrap BEE. U dont want us 2 get our land back. U hv a greed demon, we cannot trust u and it is not a joke. Even ur churches hv been segregating blacks. It is very rare 2 find Dr Beyers Naude. We like being fools as u call us fools and we will all vote ANC till de end of time
