Zwelakhe Sisulu dies at Joburg home

2012-10-04 14:20

Johannesburg - Zwelakhe Sisulu, son of the late struggle veterans Walter and Albertina Sisulu, has died at the age of 61, the presidency said on Thursday.

"We have learnt with shock and sadness of the passing on of such a distinguished South African and patriot this morning," it said in a statement.

"We are truly saddened by the loss, and extend our deepest condolences to the entire Sisulu family."

The circumstances surrounding Sisulu’s death are unclear but Destiny magazine said it understood that he died in his sleep at his Greenside, Johannesburg, home.

His nephew, Shaka Sisulu, confirmed the news to the magazine.

Zwelakhe is the son of late ANC veterans Walter and Albertina Sisulu and the brother of Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and Parliament Speaker Max Sisulu.

He worked for several news organisations, including the Rand Daily Mail and was founding editor of the New Nation newspaper.

Sisulu served as group CEO of the SABC from 1994 to 1997.

  • lsfreak - 2012-10-04 15:13

And... This means what in the greater skeem of things, people die everyday. Just because he was was a "struggle" veteran with a name behind him the world stands still. I really wonder how all the thousands of forgotten veterans feel when their friends pass on and nobody says a word :/

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-10-04 15:50

@lsfreak & ShelleyV - You don't always have to comment you know? The least you can do is keep quiet if have nothing constructive to say. When we call you guys racist ,you get upset but you are acting like racists now.

      beki.khumalo - 2012-10-04 16:01

As much as I don't agree with Masixole's vernom, I certanly understand where he is coming from! The comments on this forum by some white commentators will drive one up the wall I tell you. Racists are not born but created, and News24 commentators are doing a good job of creating racists! To ridicule the death of another, especially a decent man who led an honest life puzzles me. A person posts a message of condolences and they get a 'thumbs down', for what? Is it because the deceased is an ANC struggle veteran or is it because of his skin colour? Why are you so bitter? Do you realise how much your bitterness is harmful to you? You have a lot of people walking around with so much anger because of the manner they have been treated by some just because of their skin colour, these people include criminals. And you wonder why some of these crimes are so brutal to a certain race group, becareful how you treat those around you...

      clifford.sithole.5 - 2012-10-04 16:05

@Masixole....Did your mother no teetch you any manners you skebiresh. You don't call a woman that you S A T A N. You piece of black rubbish.

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-10-04 16:11

@beki.khumalo - Good comment bra and these same animals want black people to vote for a white led party. They are too unintelligent to note that their constant acts of racism is why the average black voter does not trust any white led party. I for one believe that there are just too many racists in the white community and these group of people created the black racists that exist today. When we take 10 steps forward ,they pull us back 30 steps. They want others to change even though they who started the whole thing have not changed one bit.I guess the saying "a leopard cannot change it's spot" comes to mind.

That's what to expect from educated DA voters.

      clifford.sithole.5 - 2012-10-04 16:35

@ omonaai ja....We will not succeed without the white people...Just look at the rest of Africa..Look how well zimbabwe is doing now that the white man has left.

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-10-04 16:50

@clifford.sithole.5 - I have no problem with white people but i am tired of how most of them disrespect Black South Africans.I am tired of their sly comments and their continuous hate speech on forums like news24. They need to shed away their mentality of hatred ,show love to their fellow South Africans and help build the nation. How are we supposed to sensitize uneducated blacks to vote for the right party when they keep doing this.Do you think any black person will vote for the DA if they read the comments made by white bloggers on the news24. They (the racist whites) do not know that they causing more damage to themselves and the country by polarizing it with their comments. The more they promote hate ,the more their lives are in danger. It is a the simple fact that they are failing to grasp. You can not continue to pinch a lion and not expect to get bitten.Unity is the only thing that can save SA.Their white superiority mentality has never worked and it will never work. All it does is create hatred and more racists.I am actually disappointed that racism is not a crime in SA.If the ruling party had made it a crime since 1994 ,many of these senseless individuals who start racial "wars" here will not have the courage to do so.

      Michael - 2012-10-04 16:57

To my fellow white racist people only here at news24; sometimes it is important to find out more about people before you comment, the comrade we are talking about here is a man of highest intergrity and character, dont just comment bad because ANC was quoted on the article. This will do you good as a citizen of this country. You wont regret it i promise you, just try my suggestion.

      lsfreak - 2012-10-04 17:26

Now I read the comments posted under my post, and am wondering just where did race come into it... I see 1st racist post was a BLACK guy "masixole"...JUST SAYING...

May his soul rest in peace and the Family, may they soon find closure. It is of reality that, it doesn't matter how long you lived, what matters is, how you liver your time. Zwelakhe, you have run your race, now, may your soul, rest. Hamba kahle.

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-04 15:50

No disrespect in the face of death (RIP), but just wondering what good this struggle has actually brought this country. The end of Apartheid - yes good, but anything else? We're in a terrible mess. I often wonder, when looking back at these 'old-timers' of 'The Struggle', made up incidentally of all SA races: is this what they wanted? I doubt it.

As usual you expose your undiluted racism and acute stupidity. Can you read at all? This is the wrong thread to post your gibberish. When Corrie Sander was murdered,Black people sympathized with his family. We did not say : "why is this important when he is not the only boxer SA has produced" I am glad you made this comment because anytime you comment on News 24 i will post a link to this page so that others can see how much of genuine sensitive South African you are(not).A lot of you whites in SA are not human that is why you rejoice when a black person dies.

Read my post again, then consider who the real racists are here. My post contains no racist/hate speech. I think you're absolute scum (and you know who you are) to bring your racist rubbish onto this page where the overwhelming majority are saying 'Rest in Peace' and paying their respects. Get lost you racist trolls.

@beki - I agree with you. Now stand in my shoes for minute, and just take some time to think. You see, I could say exactly the same thing right back at you. My question: how do we turn it around, so that perhaps one day we will all be able to look these old timers in the eyes knowing that we finally have what they wanted us to have? Because the current situation as you well know, is not what these old and respected leaders wanted.

      Mike Peach - 2012-10-04 16:50

      Well said Beki.

      beki.khumalo - 2012-10-04 16:55

Absolutely Chief, we are in trouble as a nation there's no doubt about that. And to think people died and some spent years in prison, away from their families, in the quest for equality. This is NOT the ANC of our fathers! However, the current trend of us attacking each other with every opportunity we get is not going solve or achieve anything. We need to work together and address leaders where feel they are failing the nation. Both sides, black and white, have issues with the direction our country is heading. Is is right, for instance, to have a bornfree white youth being subjected to the current labour laws? NO! How long should the BEE regulations last? They were not meant to last for eternity, have they even achieved the required objectives? NO! Should we not find effective solutions that will not alianate any section of the population? We should! But waht do we do? We take all these frustrations on each other on racial grounds instead of working together to build solutions.

      richard.bosmano - 2012-10-04 17:03

Some of us couldn't/can't handle anything connected to the anc. So there's a few thumbdowns here , maybe some "ag shame" with tongue in cheak. Look at some posters here commenting on Sanders and Terr'blanche, and the comments some through at their deaths. Difference here though is Sisulu died of a heart attack or aids, had nothing to do with white folks, and we won't miss these "terrorists". Sanders / Terr'blanche were murdered in cold blood for being "white".

      beki.khumalo - 2012-10-04 17:17

Richard, the two individuals that you used in your example, what proof do you have that they were killed for their skin colour? Both individuals were murdered by black Zimbabweans, but is that make it racial killings? Do you know how many BLACK people die in villages, townships, suburbs every weekend in the hands of criminals? Why do you run for the race card when the victim of crime is a white person? Please school me, I would really like to understand the motivation behind that white victim mentality that seems to be growing fast!
