East London – Student activist Vusi Mahlangu is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice, local police said.

Mthatha police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said Mahlangu had handed himself over at the Mthatha central police station on Tuesday, and he was detained.

Mahlangu, 33, a member of the of the Black Student Movement (BSM) and spokesperson for #OutsourcingMustFall‚ was last seen last week.

He reportedly left a friend’s home in Mthatha to attend a meeting with outsourced workers at Walter Sisulu University‚ but never arrived.

A private investigator was subsequently hired after he sent a distressed message which read: "I am either kidnapped or arrested and I am bleeding… In a dark place at Mthatha‚ my phone is about to die."

He was reportedly tracked down to the Eastern Cape and found to be safe, and in hiding.

Fatyela said: "The police are currently conducting interviews with him to find out what really happened. We are not sure what his motives were at this stage."
