African grey parrot stolen from Umhlanga pet shop

Durban - Police are searching for a man and two young children alleged to have been behind the theft of an African grey parrot from a pet shop in the Gateway shopping mall in Umhlanga at the weekend.

Closed circuit television footage captured the man appearing to remove the young exotic bird from a box and then place it in a child’s jacket before leaving the shop.

Store owner Cassim Deedat told News24 that when they discovered the bird was missing, they reviewed footage from their in-store cameras and then notified the police.

"Usually we have two people working in the shop, but when this guy and the kids came in, one of the members of staff had stepped out and only one person was manning the shop," he said.

"If you look at the footage, it looks like the young girl is keeping the shop worker distracted and the guy then pulls the bird out of the box and wraps it in the boy’s jacket,” he said.

Deedat said using children as accomplices had become common place.

He said that bird had been valued at nearly R5 000.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said no arrests had been made yet.
