Afrikaans poet's statue moved from NWU's Potch campus

Johannesburg - The statue of Afrikaner poet Jacob Daniel du Toit, better known as "Totius"  has been removed from the North West University's Potchestroom campus and will be relocated to a new home, the university said on Saturday.

A request to remove the statue from the campus was made by the Reformed Churches in South Africa's administrative bureau after communicating and consulting with the Du Toit family as well as RCSA's curators.

The request was then forwarded to the institution's rector Professor Herman van Schalkwyk.

"The Totius statue is being entrusted to the RCSA to place it on property of the RCSA in Potchefstroom," the university said in a statement on its website.

"A decision regarding the precise location will be taken after the statue has been cleaned and restored."

The statue had originally been placed in the Totius Garden of Remembrance next to the Wasgoed Spruit in Albert Luthuli Drive.

In 2009 the statue was restored and cleaned by its sculptor, Jo Roos, and his sons and then moved to the campus.

This as part of an initiative to honour authors from the North West.

"Totius was a celebrated Bible translator and poet of the versifications of the Psalms and had played an important role in the history of the former Potchefstroom University College (PUK) and the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE)," the university said.

The Theology Professor later became rector at the PU for CHE.

"He played a key role in the relocation of the Theological School from Burgersdorp to Potchefstroom in 1905, where the PUK in 1919 developed out of the Theological School as an independent tertiary institution," it said.
