Johannesburg - It was all smiles for Grade 1 pupils at Chief Albert Luthuli Primary School, in Daveyton on the East Rand, as they started their first day of school on Wednesday.

Children seemed overjoyed to be part of the official government opening of their school. There was none of the screaming, crying, and skirt-clutching that usually accompanies these occasions.

The opening was attending by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and Infrastructure Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was expected to attend the opening, but was not at the school in the morning.

Mayathula-Khoza said at the opening of the school that it would have solar heaters and energy-saving lights. Pupils would use tablets and the teachers would have laptops.

She said the state-of-the-art school, which cost R92.9m, would help the surrounding area.

"The community of Daveyton is now R92.9m richer,‎" she said.

Young boys and girls, dressed in their gold and brown uniforms, sang the national anthem and ran around the school.

Some of the children demanded that the television cameras focus on them as they played around the front gates.

Lesufi told people attending the opening that 350 children had been placed at the school.

Daveyton made news in September last year when three teenagers were necklaced, allegedly for being part of a prominent gang in Etwatwa called the OVL (One Vision Lover).

Locals were apparently fed up with the gang members’ involvement in violent crime and a lack of police action.

The school is still under construction (Lizeka Tandwa, News24)
