Johannesburg - An alleged cop killer was arrested after he shot a police officer in the head, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old man is wanted for several police killings.

He was expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Three men robbed a shop at Chris Hani Mall of an undisclosed amount of cash and several cellphones on Tuesday.

When they exited the shop they saw a police officer in uniform in an unmarked vehicle, Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said.

"The robbers thought that the officer was responding to the incident," Kgasago said.
Two of the men fled the scene, while the third suspect shot the police officer in the head. He survived and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Kgasago said a security guard called metro police to the scene.

Police managed to arrest the suspect in a nearby field.

The other two men were still at large.
