Johannesburg – An alleged house robber was shot dead in Brakpan on Monday afternoon, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department said.

Spokesperson Clifford Shongwe said the EMPD and police had been called to a residence in Brakpan North where a robbery had taken place.

"[When police arrived at] the house, the suspects ran on foot to an open field that had unused mine shafts," said Shongwe.

The suspects fired shots at the police.

A helicopter and a dog unit were dispatched in search of the suspects.

"As the search continued, one of the suspects opened fire at police, police responded. He was shot in the head and... died instantly," said Shongwe.

Brakpan police could not be immediately reached for further comment.
