Johannesburg - A suspected armed robber was killed and another injured in a shoot-out with police in Kempton Park, Gauteng police said on Friday.

Members of the elite National Intervention Unit were patrolling the area on Thursday night after receiving a tip-off that a gang of men were planning to follow people from OR Tambo International Airport and rob them, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

On Barabara Road, the team spotted a BMW fitting the description they had received.

"The driver of the vehicle ignored warnings to stop. Instead the occupants allegedly opened fire on the police, resulting in a shootout and a high-speed chase," he said.

The chase led through Kempton Park. The gang drove on the wrong side of the road, shooting at police in an effort to evade capture. One man jumped out of the BMW and ran away.

Once the BMW came to a standstill, the driver ran away. Two men were found in the car with gunshot wounds. One was already dead. The other was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Officers recovered three firearms, which would be sent for ballistic testing. The BMW had been hijacked.

The search for the remaining two suspects was continuing.
