Polokwane - Alleged wife murderer Rameez Patel looked up what was happening in the trial of another man accused of murdering his spouse, Christopher Panayiotou, during a break in proceedings on Thursday.

“It is interesting what is happening in the Panayiotou case,” he said to the public gallery in the High Court in Polokwane. He was looking at News24’s live feed of the Panayiotou trial, in the High Court in Port Elizabeth, on his cellphone.

Patel is on trial on a charge of killing his wife Fatima, 28, in their home in Nirvana, Polokwane, on April 10 2015. She was assaulted, shot in the face, and strangled. Patel has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutor Mashudu Mudau called investigating officer Captain Richard Boshomane to the stand. He gave a detailed account of Patel’s movements in and out of the property on the day of the murder.

According to Boshomane, Patel drove in at 15:45 in a black Nissan NP200. His younger brother Razeem arrived in a Toyota Corolla.

CCTV footage showed that on the day of the murder only Fatima, Patel and his younger brother drove to the house. The brothers left and returned later, at 17:26. Fatima never left.

Tumi Mokoena, for Patel, told the court his client was not at the house between 15:25 and 16:20 that day. Mokoena said Patel was at the complex around 14:00 in order to pick up his children and their nanny.

The trial continues.
