Pietermaritzburg - The spirit of Mandela Day was dashed during a standoff between the DA and ANC at a crèche at Woodlands Site 11 on Monday.

Both parties had decided to revitalise the crèche as part of the 67 minutes for Mandela.

The clash apparently ensued when the DA showed up in the ANC-led area to paint the crèche DA blue.

The DA said they had been supporting the crèche through a feeding scheme for the past three years and were baffled when they were locked out of the gates on Monday.

But ANC Ward 32 chairperson Vincent Myeni denied the DA’s claims.

He said members of the DA, led by Msunduzi mayoral candidate Mergan Chetty, unexpectedly arrived at the community hall, which houses the Vukuzakhe crèche, where the ANC had just started working.

“We started working at the crèche at around 08:00 and when the DA arrived an hour-and-a-half later, they wanted to interrupt us.

“We were not even aware of their plans to renovate the hall,” he said.

Myeni said the DA started a commotion after being denied access to the hall.

“We did not entertain them [DA]; we just continued with our work and the police arrived afterwards. But there was no violence here.”

Myeni said the DA had failed to go through the community structures necessary to gain access to the hall.

However, Chetty said their plans to renovate the hall were made public through the media.

“We had identified the crèche for our 67 minutes for Mandela Day, but surprisedly we were met by ANC members at the venue who denied us access.

“We tried to negotiate to work jointly and asked them to set aside our political differences and work together with the spirit of Mandela, but they refused,” said Chetty.

The Witness tried speaking to a Vukuzakhe crèche worker about the incident. The woman, who would not reveal her identity, repeatedly contradicted her statement about the incident.

She would also not give details of who funds the crèche’s feeding scheme.
