Johannesburg – Arguments equating corruption and incompetence with the ANC should not go unchallenged, Gauteng Premier David Makhura said on Tuesday.

He told the Gauteng legislature they had instituted disciplinary proceedings against 125 officials allegedly involved in financial misconduct. They included heads of department.

Two heads of department had already been dismissed for serious acts of misconduct, he said while delivering his final political report for 2016.

Gauteng’s economy was picking up and efforts to revitalise townships were paying off, he said.

"The work we are doing with the private sector to revitalise the township economy and unlock the potential of strategic sectors of the Gauteng economy is beginning to bear fruit."

He said his government had saved R358m in fruitless and wasteful expenditure due to invoices being paid on time and reduced litigation expenses.

Makhura called on all political parties to work together to reduce crime in the country's economic hub.

He said 9.1% of households in Gauteng experienced crime, compared to the national average of 7.5%.
