Johannesburg - The ANC is “greatly concerned” by statements its Military Veterans Association chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe has made about a group of senior party members.

Maphatsoe’s statement that the party’s veterans were “empty tins” was unfortunate, irresponsible and did not represent the ANC’s views, spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

“Our veterans remain the fountain of wisdom for the entire congress.”

He was reacting to Maphatsoe’s statement, in which he criticised the 101 ANC veterans who had been critical of the party’s leadership.

They called on the ANC’s leadership to express their unhappiness with the state of the party, asked President Jacob Zuma to resign, and wanted a special congress to be convened to elect new leaders.

Maphatsoe called them "empty tins", "irrelevant" and "without struggle credentials".

Kodwa said the ANC would continue engaging everyone with respect and humility. This was part of its efforts to “self-introspect” and regain support.
