Pretoria - The EFF say they do not need anyone's permission to stage events commemorating struggle icons.

This comes after the family of the late Solomon Mahlangu tried to interdict the party from holding a lecture about his life.

Economic Freedom Fighters secretary general Godrich Gardee on Saturday said the Pretoria municipality on Friday had informed the party about its intention to interdict and stop the planned lecture.

"While we were in the meeting, the Mahlangu family lawyers walked in and served the municipality with an interdict," he said.

"We went to court and presented ourselves. If they had a problem with it then they should have stopped government from naming public places after him. We have streets and parks named after him."

Gardee added that no individual or organisation had the right to monopolise iconic leaders.

"These are icons of our struggle and can't be monopolised by anyone, including the ANC and the family.

"In the papers, they alleged the name Solomon Mahlangu is owned by the ANC Youth League, uMkhonto weSizwe and the ANC. Solomon Mahlangu was never a member of the ANC Youth League. There was no Youth League when he joined uMkhonto weSizwe,"  he said.

Gardee added that the party would continue to celebrate struggle heroes.

"We have quite a number of people who we will celebrate as the EFF. Even former president Oliver Tambo, Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki. They are our heroes and you can't take that away," he said.

EFF leader Julius Malema is espected to deliver the lecture focusing on the life and time of Mahlangu later on Saturday.
