Johannesburg - The DA on Sunday lambasted the ANC’s mayoral candidates as "nothing new", suggesting the failure to select a Tshwane candidate indicated a fractured party.

"The mayoral candidates...represent more of the same," said Democratic Alliance spokesperson Phumzile Van Damme in a statement.

"The ANC's inability to select a Tshwane candidate… shows a fractured and broken ANC in Tshwane."

The ANC NEC rejected candidates from Tshwane during the finalisation of its mayoral candidates on Saturday.

Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe said at the time that the Tshwane region submitted its list of three candidates to the province but the provincial executive committee was dissatisfied with the choices – and new deliberations would now take place on Sunday.

The ANC retained Mayor Danny Jordaan as its mayoral candidate in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau stands as its candidate in the country's economic hub.

In Ekurhuleni, mayor Mondli Gungubele was notably replaced by Mzwandile Masina as the party candidate.

On Sunday, the DA said recent poll predictions showed that it would win in Nelson Mandela Bay and Tshwane. “We face a two-horse-race in Johannesburg.”
