Cape Town - An ANC media relations officer has taken to Twitter to downplay EFF leader Julius Malema receiving a BA degree from Unisa, claiming it is mediocre.

Khusela Sangoni, who identifies herself as a national co-ordinator for ANC media relations in her Twitter bio, said celebrating a 35-year-old achieving a degree was celebrating mediocrity.

“We are setting the bar too low if we are going to celebrate, 22 years into democracy, a BA at 35 years old. This is mediocrity at its best,” she said on Twitter.

Many detractors have since slammed her tweet.

“So ANC spokesperson disses someone who takes initiative after the school system failed them? Nice one,” replied radio talk show host Bruce Whitfield.

“Distance learning is not an easy task, especially for [a] busy politician like @Julius_S_Malema. So cut him some slack please,” tweeted @TshimangadzoR.

“No... there is no bar here... we celebrating an individual which struggled at h/school... another good story for @MyANC,” tweeted @Wandi_Sish. “It's never too late...”

“I disagree. It sets an example that, regardless of age, study is possible. We need these examples here,” tweeted @sharonwite.

“This guy launched a party and still got his degree. Your gonna be THIS petty? This late at night?” tweeted @Tee_Expressions.

One person though defended Sangoni.

“It's her opinion... it's allowed,” @MTshwete tweeted.

And others decided to throw shade of their own.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela meanwhile, in an unrelated tweet, congratulated Malema.

Following the backlash, Sangoni later tweeted: “I sign off, don't get me wrong. I congratulate individual achievement. Big ups. I'm saying we aren't [a] nation that should celebrate only minimum.”
