Cape Town – Advocate Jules Browde will be remembered for his leading role in and contribution towards a democratic South Africa, the ANC said on Thursday.

ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte paid tribute to Browde, who died aged 97 on Tuesday.

During his career of over 50 years, he represented former ANC presidents Nelson Mandela and

Oliver Tambo, and other anti-apartheid activists.

Duarte conveyed the ANC’s condolences to his wife, Selma, and his family.

“At the height of political repression, Advocate Browde had the courage to represent the oppressed in courts throughout the country,” she said.

Browde took up the case of thousands of Johannesburg people facing eviction under the Group Areas Act, she said.

“Advocate Browde will be remembered for his leading role and contribution towards the achievement of a just and democratic South Africa,” she said.

On Tuesday, the South African Jewish Board of Deputies said the community had lost one of its most loved and respected members.
