Cape Town – The African National Congress is taking racists to court, it said in a statement on Thursday.

The party had laid charges against DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnard, DA councillor Chris Roberts, former DA member Penny Sparrow, and Gauteng sports department employee Velaphi Khumalo, spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.

It wanted them prosecuted in the Equality Court and criminal courts on charges, including hate speech and unfair discrimination.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the party had a moral and legal duty to demonstrate leadership.

Last year, Kohler-Barnard shared a Facebook post which called for the return of apartheid-era president PW Botha. The ANC wanted her to pay R500 000 towards an organisation which promotes non-racialism.

She apologised and the DA fined her R20 000.

The ANC wanted Roberts, a DA Nelson Mandela Bay councillor, prosecuted for allegedly calling UDM councillor Mongameli Bobani a "bobbejaan" during a council debate on July 30 last year.

The party wanted Sparrow, who compared black people to monkeys, to pay R200 000 and be prosecuted.

In the reaction that followed Sparrow’s Facebook post, Velaphi Khumalo called for the country to do to whites what Hitler had done to the Jews.
