Pietermaritzburg - The ANC Youth League has expressed shock at the killing of its eMalahleni (Newcastle) regional deputy chairperson Wandile “Mangqasha” Ngubeni.

Ngubeni (28) was shot and killed at around 10 pm on Sunday when two men opened fire at a table of members of the party.

Regional secretary Mafika Mndebele also sustained injuries during the attack in Madadeni.

Provincial spokesperson Mkhuseli Sondzaba said the party would lower its “revolutionary” banner in Ngubeni’s honour.

Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulela said the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.

“Madadeni police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. No arrest has been made at this stage,” he said.

Sondzaba said the youth league would “unleash young lions” to collect information that would help speed up the investigation.

“The ANCYL calls on the MEC of Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu to establish a specialised task team to investigate this matter. We want the investigation to focus on finding who the planners of this assassination of our leader are. We demand justice for the death of our leader.”

Sondzaba said he would not speculate on the motive for the killing.
