Durban – Another National Freedom Party leader has been killed in KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Tuesday.

NFP PR councillor Beauty Nompumelelo Zondi, 45, was shot and killed outside her home in the Nhlanhleni area in Msinga.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said Zondi was found dead outside her home.

“The motive is unknown at this stage. A case of murder was opened at Nhlanhleni police station for investigation and no arrest has been made,” said Zwane.

NFP spokesperson Sabelo Sigudu said the party believed the murder was politically motivated.

“She was shot last night [Monday] at around 21:30 and most of the people found out about it this morning. This is the third murder in [a] short space of time.”

Sigudu said the Electoral Commission of South Africa must encourage all political parties to take a pledge to ensure that the upcoming elections were peaceful.

“What is happening to us can happen to another party. This is not taking us forward, we are calling for unity.”

In February, the NFP's Phositshe Mbatha was killed in Basamlilo near Ulundi. He was accosted by unknown gunmen who shot him and injured another person. A third person escaped unharmed.
