Pietermaritzburg - Happy, muddy faces greeted the close of the aQuellé Mudman Cordwalles race as friends and family cheered on the competitors on Sunday.

The Mudman saw children and adults compete in the tough swim, cycle and run at Midmar Dam’s Orient Park.

With hundreds of cheering spectators gathered at the finishing line, competitors from schools across KwaZulu-Natal, as well as adults, were greeted with a Mudman medal and a bottle of aQuellé water for their participation.

Food and activity tents around the finish buzzed as the sweltering sun shone down on spectators and competitors alike.

With different races to choose from, athletes competed either in the full distance course, a 700 m open water swim or 2,5 km paddle, 20 km cycle and 5 km trail run, or the short course, a 350 m open water swim or 1,25 km paddle, 10 km cycle and 2,5 km trail run. Competitors could either choose to be in tag teams of three or race as an individual.

The event, the third in the aQuellé series, also hosted a Spur Mudskippers race which saw children from the ages of four to 11 get in on the day’s fun.

Cordwalles marketing manager Ruth Forder said fun was had by all and she welcomed the big turnout.

“The turnout was better than we expected. Everyone has been fantastic and things went really well,” she said.
