Cape Town - A gang of armed robbers arrested for an attempted armed robbery at Cavendish Square on Wednesday morning, have been linked to the murder of a man killed during a hijacking, Western Cape police said.

Five men hit Trigg Jewellers at 10:30, holding staff at gunpoint and smashing display cabinets, Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said.

The alarm was triggered and the robbers fled empty-handed. They ran into the mall where security guards caught one of the alleged robbers.

On their arrival, police arrested the remaining four and confiscated an unlicensed gun.

A spokesperson for the mall said no merchandise was stolen and no one was injured.

The men were found in possession of a VW Polo, stolen in Strandfontein on Tuesday night, Traut said. A 39-year-old man was shot and killed when the car was hijacked in Milano Way at 21:00.

The suspects, aged between 23 and 32, face charges of murder, attempted armed robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm.

Four armed robbers stole an undisclosed amount of jewellery from Trigg in February, News24 previously reported. The jewellery shop was targeted in September 2015, when a few men held up staff and grabbed merchandise.
