Johannesburg – At least three armed men opened fire on motorists on Main Reef Road, Crown Mines, on Sunday, a News24 reader has said.

Police on Monday said they had no knowledge of the incident.

Ryan Merifield said he was sitting in his car at a traffic light on Main Reef Road when the men opened fire with an AK-47 and a handgun, possibly in an attempt to steal one of the vehicles. They left a bullet hole in his windshield and shattered his rear window.

"It looked as if they were looking for a getaway car," Merifield told News24.

He said he saw the men shoot at the driver of the car behind him.

Merifield managed to get away and stopped at a road block to alert police officers. He said he was panicking and shouting.

Four officers got into a VW Polo and drove to the scene.

He was unsure what had happened to driver of the car behind him.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said they were still searching for information about the shooting.

“We haven’t heard anything about the matter," he said.
