Cape Town - A policeman is in a stable condition in a Cape Town hospital after he was shot while responding to an armed robbery in Durbanville on Tuesday night, Western Cape police have confirmed.

Spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said two officers responded to a business robbery at a shop in Fisantekraal at 19:50.

"Upon their arrival on the scene, the suspects shot at police, wounding one of the members," he said.

The suspects fled the scene.

Traut said the matter was under investigation and no arrests had yet been made.

In June, a police constable was shot dead and his colleague wounded when they responded to an attempted ATM bombing in Delft.

The 40-year-old constable was shot and killed by two gunmen wielding AK47s, while the warrant officer survived the attack.

In May, a policeman assigned to the VIP Protection Unit in Cape Town managed to drive himself to hospital after he was shot and injured in Delft.

He was hit in the lower abdomen while at a set of traffic lights after three men ambushed him.

He returned fire and the trio fled.
