Johannesburg - Around 250 shacks were burnt to the ground in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

Emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe said they received reports of the fire at around 10:30 at the Jumpers informal settlement.

Five fire engines were deployed to the scene and firefighters had managed to contain the flames.

"One person was treated for smoke inhalation, but he refused to be taken to the hospital," Radebe said.

It was unclear what sparked the blaze.

This was one of several fires to that struck around Johannesburg informal settlements this week, leaving hundreds of people displaced.

Earlier this week, around 200 shacks went up in smoke in Kya Sands leaving scores of people homeless.

Shack dwellers told News24 that they believed the fire was started by a generator from one of the shacks. Radebe, however, said they could not say "definitively, what caused the fire".

Another fire was reported in Alexandra township on Friday.

That blaze reportedly destroyed around 20 shacks.

No fatalities or injuries had been reported. It was also unclear what had sparked that blaze.
