Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police on Thursday vowed to bring to book the killers of an off-duty police officer in Umzinto.

"We will thoroughly investigate this case and make sure that we apprehend the criminals and take them to court for prosecution," said acting provincial commissioner Major-General Bheki Langa.

Five armed men accosted the officer and a female colleague as they were sitting in a car in Shayamoya around 20:00 on Tuesday, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said.

The two officers were off-duty at the time.

The 47-year-old officer was shot dead. His colleague was forced into the car's boot and driven to Amanzimtoti, where she was forced to withdraw money from an ATM.

"She was later abandoned at Umgababa Ultra City and the suspects threatened to kill her family if she looked at their faces. They sped off in her vehicle."

Zwane said a case of murder, armed robbery, car hijacking, and kidnapping was opened at the Umzinto police station.

Anyone with knowledge about the crime could contact their local police station, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
